3 do-it-yourself drill attachments

A drill is one of the most versatile tools for a small workshop. This is due to the possibility of installing various equipment on it for drilling, grinding, milling, and polishing. Many of these attachments are so simple that you can make them yourself.

Lighter cutter

The easiest attachment to make is a cutter made from a broken gas lighter. To assemble it, you need to remove the ignition wheel from the lighter. It consists of 3 parts.

The nozzle requires a central one. To do this, its sides are pryed off with a screwdriver and removed. Then the central part is put on the mandrel holder.

The result is a small carbide cutter. It can be used when working with wood, plastic, and metals.

Sanding discs

Many people do not buy sanding discs, but cut them out of sandpaper, which is many times cheaper. However, circles made with scissors are far from ideal, and they also take a long time to cut. To make them in the correct shape and very quickly, you can assemble a hole punch for making holes for the mandrels and a drill for cutting out circles.
To make a hole punch, you need to cut 2 blanks of approximately 35x10 mm from wood or textolite. At one edge they are coated with epoxy glue and pinned to each other, but so that on half the area between them there is a spacer made of a ruler or a piece of plastic.

After the glue hardens, the gasket is removed and in the half where it was located, a through hole is made with a drill equal to the diameter of the mandrel. After this, on the side of the shank of the drill used, you need to make a concavity at the end. For this, a small diameter cutter is used.
The working part of the drill is wrapped and closed with any cap of suitable diameter. Then a spring is put on the shank of the drill, and it is inserted into the hole in the textolite part. Now, by placing sandpaper between the PCB plates and pressing on the drill, you can pierce holes for the mandrel for the drill discs.

Next, a U-shaped blank like a ballerina drill is bent from a strip of tin. Its edges are sharpened. The workpiece is then inserted into the mandrel.

With its help, centering on the previously made holes with a hole punch, you can cut out disks that are exactly the same as store-bought ones.

Drum flap wheels

To make the next attachment, you need to select a tube that matches the diameter of the existing grinding drum.

A paper tape is wound onto it in several layers. Glue is spread between the layers.

After drying, the paper tube is removed and cut into pieces to fit the width of the drum.

Then sandpaper petals are glued onto them. Glue is applied only to their edge. The petals are arranged so that the shape of the nozzle resembles a turbine. When using good glue, such a nozzle works no less than a store-bought one.
