Over time, the inner walls of the toilet tank and the mechanism for filling and draining water become covered with limescale and rust. If you do not periodically clean the tank and mechanism from such contaminants, then this sanitary appliance will begin to work poorly or completely fail.

How to remove limescale and rust from a toilet cistern without extra effort

First of all, unscrew the drain button, carefully remove the tank lid and turn off the water supply valve to the tank from the water supply. Then we drain the previously accumulated portion of water from the tank.

In hot water, but not in boiling water, dissolve approximately 150 grams of citric acid and fill the tank with this solution to a level slightly higher than the usual value for this indicator to completely remove all limescale.

The reaction between an aqueous solution of citric acid and limescale on the walls of the tank immediately begins. Leave the system alone for about 3 hours. But before that, using a brush, we also remove plaque from the water intake and drainage mechanism.

After 3 hours, the water in the tank acquires a greenish tint. We scrub off the remaining limescale deposits from the walls of the tank using a brush.

We drain the mixed water from the toilet cistern, which contains residual citric acid and lime, rust and interaction products of the components.

To prevent the toilet tank and mechanism from becoming dirty for a long time, you can place a container of a suitable size with liquid laundry soap at the bottom of the tank, having previously made a small cut in the wall of the container just above the water level in the tank at the time it is emptied.

When the tank is filled with water, liquid soap does not flow out of the container, but when emptied, a small amount of it is released and with each flush it cleans the inside of the tank and deodorizes it.
