In 2019, the transition of Russian television to digital format ended. This circumstance caused a lot of trouble for owners of old TVs. They had to buy new televisions or special set-top boxes that would allow the new television to work on old devices.

Digital terrestrial broadcasting set-top box of the international standard DVB-T2, a full-fledged device that performs complete signal processing and transmission to a TV or monitor.

Most digital set-top boxes in Russia come from China and have a very limited working resource. Even if the manufacturer is a serious company, the quality of the components used in the devices leaves much to be desired.

This fact is not very pleasant for users on the one hand; on the other hand, work has appeared for electronics repair specialists.

A broadcast TV set-top box is a complex electronic device and a malfunction can occur with any of many elements.

The most common cause of malfunction of the DVB-T2 set-top box

For electrical power supply of set-top boxes, standard external and internal switching power supplies are used.

If the external power supply malfunctions, it is enough to replace it with a new one; an experienced electronics engineer should deal with the internal power supply.

The practice of repairing digital TV set-top boxes is not yet widespread, since the devices appeared relatively recently. But still, some faults are marked by specialists as typical, that is, repeated on many devices of the same type.

One of these malfunctions is the failure of the filtering electrolytic capacitor of the secondary circuit.

This capacitor is installed on the secondary voltage bus and connects the plus to ground. This is necessary to eliminate pulsations.

When the capacitor fails, a short circuit occurs. The power supply goes into protection. The capacitor is inflated, but may remain intact.

Analysis of the “behavior” of the set-top box helps to identify this malfunction. In some cases, when the set-top box is connected to the network, it emits a high-frequency “whistle” of varying degrees of volume. In other cases, the device is “silent”, but the main factor is the lack of light on the indicator.

There are several reasons for the breakdown

  • The first reason is the use of a set-top box with an active antenna. This type of antenna uses a signal amplifier, and it is powered from an external power supply via a standard coaxial cable. For this case, the set-top box provides an active antenna power mode. Using an external power supply instead of the built-in mode leads to overload and failure of the capacitor in question.
  • In the second case, the part fails due to poor quality.

To eliminate the malfunction, in most cases it is enough to replace the failed capacitor.

It is unlikely that the capacitor will break through, most likely due to the incorrectly chosen type of capacitor or due to the initially poor quality, the capacitor heats up during operation, the electrolyte boils, and the capacitor swells. its capacity decreases and the switching power supply stops working normally. During a short circuit, the capacitor will not swell.

I set the capacitors to a higher voltage and ok! Only LOW ESP. The GLOBO30 prefix has served for 5 years.

        What is "LOW ESP"???
        Maybe LOW ESR? :)

“The practice of repairing digital TV set-top boxes is not yet widespread” Come on! - Seriously? In 99% of cases, these are really problems with the power supply, or rather with the dc-dc converters, power is lost on 1.2, 1.8, and 3.3 Buses!

Electrolyte almost always flies there, for amateurs, it’s easy to check, in 90% of cases the top of the capacitor is swollen, those who know how to solder can fix the problem themselves, I’ve already repaired these set-top boxes three times over the phone.

one more reason and you didn’t indicate this is a glitch or the software control crashes and updating its console becomes a corpse; it’s not always possible to revive it and it’s expensive

"failure of the filter electrolytic capacitor of the secondary circuit."
Author, what kind of nonsense is this? Or is it more important to say a few incomprehensible words with a smart face?
What exactly does this capacitor filter? This is a storage capacity, without which a pulsed power supply, in principle, will not work.
I advise you to read what and how capacitors filter in specialized literature.

"When a capacitor fails, a short circuit occurs."
The second complete nonsense is written. When a capacitor fails, its capacity decreases and internal resistance increases.
The power supply “goes into protection” precisely because of the decrease in capacity, and not because of the short circuit.
Due to the increase in internal resistance, the capacitor heats up, the electrolyte boils and the capacitor swells and sometimes explodes (if the Chinese did not cut the bottom well).

PS: There are many more chaotically written “smart words” in the article; I chose only the most offensive ones, showing the author’s complete illiteracy in electronics.

What can burn out in the set-top box if the antenna input receives 12 volts from the external power supply of the active antenna?

It's simple, the set-top boxes sold here for 10-12 bucks (I don't dare to guess what their cost is in China!) simply cannot be of high quality... And repairs are unlikely to be economically profitable, unless you try yourself if you have a lot of time and You’re still young and you believe that in the future you won’t have to carry this knowledge behind your shoulders;)

I have already repaired three set-top boxes and all of them have the same problem, the capacitor fails at 1000 microforats. It just swells and that's it!

Solder X7R 0.1 µF ceramics parallel to the electrolyte (directly from the side of the tracks on the board, between the legs of the electrolyte) and forget about the problems.

A little education for beginning craftsmen.
One of the comrades wrote “microforate”, firstly, it is usually written as “uF”, and secondly, if not abbreviated, that is, the unit of measurement of capacitance is “Farad” and is written with the letter D, the unit is named after the physicist Mike Faraday. Enlighten yourself, it won’t hurt
