Pillows allow you to experiment with fabrics in different styles, types and patterns. To make a pillow, you can use the remaining scraps that have not found use. Such pillows will complement the interior, serve as decoration, and create comfort.
To make a pillow you need:
-fabric, two shades. It is not necessary to use fabric of the same composition. You can use, for example, 1-velvet fabric (medium thickness) and 2-satin fabric, contrasting color, or fabric of the same composition, but different colors.
- floss threads for embroidery.
Preparing parts.
Before you start cutting out the pillows, you should see which pillow will suit the interior best.
The good thing about sewing a pillow with your own hands is that it can be sewn to suit every taste and color.
The example below describes sewing a square-shaped pillow. The size of the pillows can be absolutely any, but you shouldn’t make them very large, they will look ridiculous.
Reveal the details.
First, the front and back parts of the pillow are cut out.For such a pillow, a square is cut out of the selected fabric of the required size (in the example, it is a square with sides of 40 cm), but do not forget about the supply of fabric in order to process the edges. If the edges are overlogged, then you can leave a minimum fabric gap (0.5 cm).
Then a second square is cut out of fabric of a contrasting color, but in a smaller size. The size of the square depends on the size of the selected application. In the example given: square 25×25 cm.
Next, you need to cut out such a piece from fabric, the main color, measuring 15x15 cm.
Once the parts are prepared, you can start sewing them together. You need to take a smaller square and sew it to part A. You should get a complete square, just like the one that was cut out entirely. There is no need to sew two squares together yet; first you need to decorate the resulting part.
Decoration details.
To decorate, you can use a frill, or make a edging from a contrasting fabric, apply basson trims, or decorate with a border-roller. Lace trim around the edges will make the pillow more feminine, especially if fabric with flowers is used to sew it. This pillow is perfect for the bedroom.
The frill can be made narrow or wide and loose. This pillow is suitable for armchairs.
Any frill looks very good on any fabric.
- A strip of fabric is cut out, folded in half, right side inside and stitched along the edge. Then the strip is turned right side out.
-Then the strip is gathered and sewn along the edge of a small square. This creates an edging.
-After the edging is ready, it’s time to start embroidery. The pattern can be any one you choose. The design is applied to the fabric and embroidered with floss threads.
If you don’t want to waste time, you can purchase ready-made appliqués and simply sew them on.
Assembly of parts.
When the decoration is ready, you can sew the parts together. Place the back and front pieces together, right sides facing each other, and sew them on three sides. Do not stitch the last side completely so that you can insert the filler. After the filling is ready, hide the edges inside and stitch.
Gaskets.
For soft padding, a mixture of feather and down is used. You can also use padding polyester. The pillow should be stuffed tightly.
For those who prefer hard pillows, foam wrapped in thick synthetic padding is a good choice.
The padding can also be mixed: fiber and feather. This packing option is inexpensive and more accessible.
Note:
- If you use down and feather, then it is better to sew another square of thick fabric inside, then in the future, the down and feather will not penetrate through the fabric.
