How to make a drill from a nail

I'll show you how to make a simple drill from an ordinary nail, with which you can drill steel, wood, plastic, etc. Yes, you read everything correctly, with this drill you can drill thick steel of about 5 mm. Ingenuity is a good thing; it will always help you out in difficult life situations. So, to increase the level of self-development, I suggest you familiarize yourself with this method. Perhaps it will be useful in life.

Making a metal drill from a nail

We take a nail and grind off its tip using sandpaper. There is no need to do this completely, about half.

Use a hammer to flatten the end under a flathead screwdriver.

Next, use sandpaper to make cutting edges like a drill.

This is how it should turn out.

In principle, the drill is ready, but it can only drill wood, plastic or other soft metals.

Drill hardening - carburizing

To turn a drill into a metal drill, it must be hardened. To do this, we need a DC welding machine and a metal jar with crushed graphite. Graphite can be obtained from old brushes by grinding them with a file.

If you don't have a jar, you can use a piece of flat steel. We connect the positive electrode to the jar, and the negative electrode to the nail.
Turn on the welding machine.

We lower the cutting edge into graphite. As soon as the masa begins to turn red, lift the nail. The main thing here is not to burn everything that was carved. There is no need to overheat, move the nail to achieve a slight spark. The whole procedure lasts 1-2 minutes.

This method is called cementation. That is, the cutting edge is saturated with carbon, which in turn adds strength.

Next, we clamp it in a vice and saw off the cap.

Metal tests

Let's move on to testing. We clamp the drill in the chuck of a vertical drilling machine.

And we drill the steel corner as with a regular drill, periodically spraying it with lubricant.

Let's give it a second try.

The exit hole is drilled no worse than with a conventional drill.

Now the task is more difficult - checking the stainless steel. It is known that this cannot be done simply.

We also drill with lubricant.

Of course, the strength of such a drill will not be enough for long. If you drill into wood, then in principle it will work, but for steel the safety margin is limited to a few holes, it all depends on the thickness of the steel.

In difficult situations it can quite help out. Bye everyone!

Difficult life situation. There is a welding machine, there is emery, but there is no drill for 10 rubles. But I liked about cementation. We saturate the outer layer with carbon - the hardness increases, the middle layers are viscous. Everything is as it should be. We apply the method for any purpose.

You misunderstand the situation somewhat. I somehow needed to drill a window frame, it was about 250 mm, there was no such drill in stock, I was reluctant to buy it because of one hole, especially since it was not a fact that such a drill would be in the store. I had to make it from rebar. From reinforcement because the steel in it is much better hardened than nail steel. As a result, I drilled it with a regular drill, then finished it with this homemade one.

Interesting from a purely educational point of view. The message is not correct. What kind of difficult life situation is this, in which, due to the lack of a drill, you need to find a DC welding machine in order to make this drill?

A house is not a locksmith's workshop. There are emergency situations.

This is from the point of view of no drill, or no welder and sharpener.

Before the revolution, peasants carried out such events without a welding machine. It just seems to me that carbonizing it is not enough. It still needs to be hardened.

Cementation is correct. Only hardening is required in water. In this case, the steel must be 0 and no higher than steel 3, otherwise the quenching will have to be done in oil.

Should I use steel ST-3, which all mechanics call wooden iron?
Have you ever dealt with this brand? This is the lousiest steel from the times of Stalin.

For its purposes it is even better than 45 steel. When welding, the 45 will be hardened and this place in the structure may burst under loads; in general, it will be a weak point, and ordinary structural steel is practically not hardened.

reminds me of an old joke: If you don’t have yeast, go buy it, you won’t be able to do anything without it))

From the series, our hands are not for boredom. Having a welding machine and not having a set of drills is just ridiculous. Or is the toad strangling after buying a welder? But you won't save much on pennies.

The author presented the material a little incorrectly. Of course, it is difficult to understand that a master with so many tools and equipment has difficulties with a conventional drill. A drill made of nail steel, no matter what you do with it, will not replace a regular one, especially if you are drilling steel again. Here HHS is the usual one in the air!
But the option when you need a disposable drill of non-standard length or diameter is quite acceptable. True, difficulties may arise with hardening at home, as well as with cementation, but using the above technology, it is possible and necessary to weld a drill from a piece of reinforcement and drill through wood.Although it is quite possible that during the process you will have to resharpen this “drill” several times.

I read the comments.. For metal, I think, this is not an option, but when working with wood, I have had cases when I made such “one-time” drills. There are different situations: a child “ruined” the last drill an hour before you needed it (the debris, of course, was quietly thrown away), and the shops are already closed, or it just takes a couple of minutes to drill, and it’s a 20-minute ride to the store by “toptobus” one way. And what? Run after the drill? There is no point. So the idea has the right to life.
