Of course, a visual inspection of the engine is also quite informative, especially on the market. When the engine is running, it should not make metallic sounds and should run smoothly and stably. But the main focus will be on studying the exhaust pipe, more precisely, those deposits that form during engine operation. You should run your finger inside the outlet hole and examine what, in fact, remains on it.

A small amount of soot on the walls of the exhaust pipe is normal, but the complete absence of any contamination indicates that the seller is an experienced person and has something to hide. The presence of oil and condensate is a bad sign, indicating problems with the engine and its wear.
Checking backdraft
With the engine running, place a banknote so that about one third covers the exhaust pipe. It should be pressed on the side opposite to the edge. If gases move inward, the bill will immediately show this. In this case, deviations from the norm are possible in the operation of the gas distribution and fuel systems, the car’s spark plugs, and most likely, the passage of one or more valves.
If the bill vibrates exclusively in the outward direction, then everything is in order with the ignition and valves.
Exhaust re-inspection
For this check, you will need to ensure that the engine is running at high speeds (3-4 thousand) for 1-2 minutes. If the seller prevents this, feel free to leave, even if you like the car. The presence of smoke indicates worn piston rings. After gassing, you should again run your finger along the inside of the pipe. A little condensation and just a little soot may remain on the walls. The presence of oil is a bad sign.

Such simple “tricks” allow you not only to independently monitor the condition of your car’s engine. Using this method when searching for and purchasing a new car on the secondary market will allow you to avoid unscrupulous sellers and prevent possible financial losses associated with unplanned repairs of a newly purchased car.
