I've been looking at my dish drainer for a long time. It is metal, bought in an economy class store. The quality is appropriate. Since the dryer is constantly in contact with moisture, after some time our piece of furniture became covered with an unpleasant red coating. I tried to wash it with water and a washcloth, but what was the use: the coating only increased and loose rust appeared. The picture shows only a fragment of the grille so that you can get a closer look at what it looked like.
I once read on the Internet that in this situation, a water-acetic composition combined with hydrogen peroxide, in which the object being treated can be completely immersed, can be very helpful. This procedure requires at least twelve hours. In our house, putting a much-needed item out of service for twelve hours is a disaster. So we held out until the vacation, waiting for everyone to leave.
What did I need
I didn’t remember the exact proportions of the recipe, but I did this: I poured half a liter bottle of vinegar and half a hundred-milliliter bottle of three percent peroxide into five liters of water (this is exactly the container it is packaged in pharmacies). She made up the solution in a wide basin, where she placed her rusty “beauty”. Since only the lower part of the grate was damaged, this amount of liquid was sufficient.
Cleaning
12 hours have passed. After I took the dryer out of the basin, I was very upset: all the rust was still there. Out of frustration, I took a sponge and dishwashing liquid. Imagine my surprise when everything was washed off very easily, only at the junction of the twigs I had to clean it a little with an old toothbrush. The procedure took fifteen minutes (no more). Judge for yourself how great it turned out. Of course, if you look closely, you can see rare small black dots in those places where there was loose corrosion. It may be worth looking for another effective remedy.
Well, in the meantime, it seems that our “helper” has found a second life and will serve her owners for a little while longer (until the next cleaning).
By the way, this same solution can be used several times. In it I was able to wash a shelf made of the same metal, the bottom of a galvanized bucket and the metal parts of the mixer.
