Process of coating metal with zinc
To do galvanizing, you need to get zinc. It can be dissolved from ancient auto parts, for example, broken carburetors and fuel pumps. To do this, battery electrolyte is poured into a glass container, and a zinc part is immersed in it. Sulfuric acid in the electrolyte will dissolve zinc in half an hour.
As a result of the reaction, a cloudy solution is formed in the jar, which must be filtered through a watering can with cotton wool. After filtration, the solution will become much lighter.
Next, you need to pour alcohol into it. It is added in an approximate ratio of 1:40.
A metal part, cleaned of dirt and rust, is immersed in the prepared bath and left for 10 minutes. While it is being processed with zinc, you need to prepare 2 containers. One makes an aqueous solution of powdered cleaning agent, and the second makes baking soda. Each component is added in the amount of 1 tbsp. spoons per 1 liter of water, more is possible, but there will be no benefit from it.
After 10 minutes, the part is removed from the zinc acid and dipped in a baking soda solution. It needs to be shaken well to neutralize any remaining acid. After this, it is washed in detergent. You need to wipe it with a dish scraper to remove any oxides on the surface. The part is then immersed in acid again.
After 10-15 minutes the action is repeated. It is necessary to repeatedly dip the part in acid and rinse until it is covered with a continuous layer of zinc. To achieve this, it may take 3-5 or more repetitions.
In order not to wait in vain while the tool is in a bath of acid, you can process several products at the same time. While one of them is washed, the second is soaked in acid. Using this method, you can restore an old tool to a new condition without spending much money.
