When performing roofing work, slate is usually trimmed with a grinder. When you don’t have an angle grinder, electricity, or you just don’t want to create dust, then try chopping it this way.
What you will need:
- hammer;
- a piece of old blade from a frame sawmill or hacksaw.
Slate cutting process
To perform the work, you need to make a special tool. It looks like a cut strip from a saw blade. Its working side should be blunt, ground at 90°. If there is a sharpening on it, the slate will split when cutting. For convenience, a handle can be riveted to the strip.
The tool is applied with a corner to the marking, starting from the center of the slate. Then it is struck lightly with a hammer. The canvas is immediately cut into the sheet.
You need to cut through each wave from the middle to the crest, first in one direction, then in the opposite direction.
The result will be a very smooth cut, almost like a grinder. You can trim with this tool in any direction, even lengthwise, across or obliquely.
