Determining where zero and phase are using an indicator screwdriver is not difficult. But what if you don’t have it at hand? Use a regular multimeter. There is a little trick with which you can not only determine the voltage with a multimeter, but also a phase wire anywhere.

How to determine where zero and phase are with a multimeter

The first step is to install multimeter for measuring alternating current and for maximum voltage. In this model it is “750 V”.

Make sure the terminals are in the correct sockets to measure voltage, not current.

These two steps must be controlled very precisely, otherwise there will be adverse consequences.

Now you need to find the grounding. This, for example, could be a water tap.

Dishwasher or washing machine body.

Ground contact of the socket.

When the grounding is found, we search for the phase with the second probe.

Once connected multimeter showed a high value - there is a phase in the conductor.

Adviсe

  • Many “experienced” electricians recommend that instead of “grounding” you take the free contact of the probe in your hands and use your body as grounding - it is sincerely not recommended to do this, since with the slightest mistake you may find yourself under voltage and, as a result, receive an electric current discharge.
  • Second. If the length of the probe is not enough to reach the grounding contact, it must be extended with any wire.
  • Do not use a gas pipe as a ground connection, even for measurements.

Some nonsense would not recommend this method of determining zero N, there are many factors involved.
...Xia! Take my word for it. I have over 50 years of experience!!!

Nothing better has been invented yet than an indicator on a neon! And then you can make a mistake when a phase reaches zero through the load, with non-standard connections (in old houses they didn’t bother much about where the zero was and where the phase was, and at the installation stage it was simply impossible to find the right wire, there was no voltage in the house yet!).
