In order to clearly verify this, the next time you change the engine oil, we install a neodymium magnet at the bottom of the new oil filter, directly opposite the bypass valve. Why it is necessary to install a neodymium magnet in this place, we will consider later.

Let's disassemble and check the oil filter

When the time comes for the next engine oil change in the engine based on mileage or during a seasonal change, unscrew the old oil filter with the attached neodymium magnet and carefully saw its body in the transverse direction using a grinder, a hacksaw or other suitable metal-cutting tool.

We remove the sawn-off upper part of the oil filter housing, the check valve, the filter element clogged with dirt and other contaminants, and the bypass valve. We tilt the lower part of the oil filter housing with neodymium magnet outside so that the remaining used engine oil drains from the bottom.

After this procedure, you can visually observe a certain elevation in the central part of the bottom of the oil filter above the neodymium magnet located on the outside.

Basically, this elevation consists of fine metal dust, which can be clearly seen if you rub some of its contents between your fingers.

One may wonder: why does a neodymium magnet need to be installed at the bottom of the oil filter under the bypass valve? The fact is that under certain operating modes of the power plant, for example, when starting a cold engine, especially in winter, or when the filter element begins to become clogged and passes the engine oil worse, the bypass valve opens and the engine oil enters the engine lubrication system directly without passing through filtration process, that is, without purification.

We can safely say that such an installation of a neodymium magnet on the bottom of the oil filter allows you to retain metal particles, dust and shavings not only when the bypass valve is closed, but also when it is open. This increases the efficiency of installing a neodymium magnet in the central part of the oil filter bottom.

This simple but clear experiment shows that the installation neodymium magnet in the center of the bottom of the oil filter brings real benefits, retaining some of the wear products of the rubbing parts of the engine, resulting in an increase in its service life.
