A simple sharpener for kitchen knives, which you can make with your own hands in 5 minutes if you wish. You don’t need scarce parts and tools for this. This will be a very useful thing for your kitchen.

What do you need for a sharpener?

  • - Two used flint lighters.
  • - A small wooden block.
  • - A pair of self-tapping screws.

Let's start making a knife sharpener

The first step is to remove two steel wheels from both lighters that strike the silicon. This is all simply done with a flathead screwdriver. Next, use the same screwdriver to free the middles of these wheels from the aluminum sides, so that in the end you are left with only steel wheels without lining.

Then you need to put steel wheels on a small wooden block.

Place them together and screw them to the block with self-tapping screws. The scales of the wheels should be directed in one direction.

The knife sharpener is ready. It will not take up much space in the household, and, if necessary, you can take it with you even on a hike.
The sharpener is very easy to use. You take the knife, place its tip between the wheels, and with a little effort pull the knife towards you.
As a result, metal shavings appear and the dull edge of the knife is sharpened.

Checking the sharpener

I took a dull knife, which initially practically did not cut the paper. I made a dozen movements on the sharpener I had just made.
That's it, the knife is sharpened perfectly. The paper sheet is cut into pieces.

...the sharpener is simple, logical, and hard-working! The only thing is that the flints must be placed at an angle of 25° to each other. Then luxury...!!!

Actually, this is NOT a sharpener. The blade does sharpen, but...like a SAW. The knife SAWS, not cuts. It doesn't help for long, but it does work quickly. blush

The best thing is that the “device” really works. And no outlet is required for the branded sharpener. And there is no fuss with the donkey. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE (tested by experience):
You should not “press” when sharpening. We stretch it without pressure (against the “wool”), the blade finds its own place. Five to six passes (10 sec.). AND THEN “through the wool” - also without pressure (two to three passes). At the same time, the knife begins to cut everything - from toilet paper to thick Whatman paper (I’m not even talking about tomatoes). I tried to finish it on a whetstone (for the sake of experiment) - there’s not much difference... I wasted my time...
HOW CORRECT!? BUT THE CORRECT THING IS NOT “AROSS”, but “LONGWAY”. The blade of the knife will DEFINITELY break off at the “exit” and scratch (leave traces of activity) on the kitchen table or immediately become dull if the tabletop is stone (fashionable) or stainless steel (rare in everyday life). Wooden plank - at least 20 cm in length. The wheels are attached with a 1.5 cm offset from the middle (to visually know in which direction “against the grain”). The blade of even a long kitchen(!) knife will ALWAYS fall on the bar, and not on your finger (it hurts!) or the top of a polished coffee table (desk, for computer) table.
The first time I saw a sharpener on Zen was half a year ago. I don’t kill knives (my wife doesn’t ask her neighbor to “sharpen” or “take out the trash”). And I turned the wheels a little only once (by a couple of cloves). I used a knife - “tuck it in”.
And to find self-tapping screws (to fit a camel into the eye of a needle) - I rummaged through the whole house (techie) and found a couple!
