There are many known sharpening methods, after proper use of which the cutting qualities of knives become comparable to the sharpness of razors. At the very least, such knives can easily cut a sheet of paper or newspaper while hanging.
One of these methods can be implemented if you have a sharpening machine with a wheel made of multilayer plywood mounted on its shaft. But before sharpening, it is necessary to treat the working surface of the disc with a special white compound for final polishing of products made of hard metals and stainless steel using polishing wheels.

After that, it is enough to sharpen the knife for a few seconds on a plywood wheel so that it acquires a razor sharpness and calmly cuts the paper on the fly. Moreover, you can shave comfortably with this knife.
This method can be used to sharpen not only knives, but also carpentry tools: chisels, plane knives, axes, scissors, etc. It will take no more than one minute to perfectly sharpen any cutting tool.

Making a disk from plywood

We cut out a circle from multilayer plywood using an electric jigsaw, having previously drawn a circle of the required diameter using a suitable round template and marking its center.

On a drilling machine, drill a hole in the center equal to the diameter of the shaft seat of the grinding machine.

We install a circle cut out of multilayer plywood onto the shaft, having previously placed a metal washer. We place the same washer under the nut, which we tighten securely with a wrench.

Some slight beating of the circle, as a result of sawing errors, should not bother us, since it can be easily eliminated by processing the rotating circle using a flat carpenter's chisel. As a stop we use a piece of pipe or a rigid rod, securely fastened in a vice and oriented along the working surface of the circle.

Now all that remains is to cover the working surface of the plywood circle with a composition for finishing polishing metal products, bringing the block of this material closer to the rotating disk.

Our homemade tool is completely ready for work - sharpening any knives and other cutting tools.
Once again we are convinced that to sharpen any knife, we will need no more than one minute, after which the knife cuts paper on the fly, easily removes shavings from wood and even cuts off thin and soft hairs on the hand.

Alternative (traditional) sharpening option

To do this, we use four sharpening water stones in the following sequence: pink, yellow, green and white with decreasing grain size. But before you start sharpening the knives, the stones need to be soaked in water: for coarse-grained ones, 5 minutes is enough, for fine-grained ones it will take about 20 minutes.

If this is not done, the pores of the stone will soon become clogged with metal particles, which is why the surface of the sharpener becomes smooth and loses its abrasiveness, that is, it stops sharpening. During the sharpening process, a special suspension appears on the surface of a wet stone, including stone chips and metal powder. It cannot be removed, since it is this suspension that ensures high quality sharpening of knives.

We place the soaked sharpener in a special holder, which ensures its immobility during the sharpening operation.
We apply longitudinal and transverse lines to the stone with a slate pencil, which will serve as a kind of control grid during pre-treatment with a special stone in order to create favorable conditions for starting to sharpen the knife. The uniformity and quality of stone processing will be signaled by the disappearance of the grid over the entire grinding surface.
Next, we sharpen the knife, observing all the instructions when performing this operation. We repeat the procedures described for the first stone for all other stones. As a result, after about one and a half to two hours, the knife will acquire a sharpness sufficient to cut paper by weight.

Conclusion

So, the traditional method of sharpening using water sharpening stones takes from 90 to 120 minutes. On our plywood wheel, treated with a special compound for finishing products made of hard metals and stainless steel, sharpening any knife will take only about one minute.

When sharpening in this way, the cutting edge of the knife overheats and releases. And the only way for him to go further is to the trash.

To fine-tune it to a razor sharpness, it will do, but if you press a little harder, it will burn instantly, at a minimum a large dent is provided, at most, the knife is in the trash, or remade in a new way.
