How to make a simple cut into a steel pipe

In plumbing, and even in household practice, there are often cases when it is necessary to connect to a pipe and drain water. Let's say, to connect a washing machine. To do this, they usually pull a water pipe or hose to the distribution manifold, or saw the pipe and install a tee.
In old Soviet houses, the pipes are so inconveniently and clumsily laid out that connecting to them is tantamount to having to rebuild the entire system again.
But there is a way out! You can make a tie-in with a clamp into any nearby highway. So, more details...

How to make a simple cut into a steel pipe with your own hands

What will you need?
  • Drainage (inset) - 1 pc.

It can be bought at plumbing stores, but before doing so, be sure to check what kind of pipe you have to which the connection will be made. I took 1/2 inch.
Here's what it looks like:

Now let's move on to the connection. First of all, we close the riser and drain the water.
Then we drill a hole with a metal drill. The diameter of the hole must be equal to or less than the diameter of the insert.

Next, use sandpaper to sand the area where the clamp will be put on.The surface must be smooth, free of old paint and rust. We put on the insert clamp, before installing the sealed gasket that comes with the insert.

Next, carefully tighten the 4 mortise bolts. You need to twist it carefully, alternately, preferably crosswise. This is necessary so that the gasket fits better and the clamp itself does not warp.
The insert is ready. We connect the required hose to it.

Turn it on and check the tightness. To do this, I recommend using a paper napkin or toilet paper, because the drops are immediately visible on it, but your hand may simply not feel it all.

Also, after the insertion, it would be a good idea to install a tap before connecting the hose.

In general, such an insert will help you out in seemingly the most hopeless situations.

The connection can be used for both cold and hot water. In addition, this is a very fast method and sometimes the only possible one.

The author forgot to point out that it is possible, and indeed necessary, to drill on an already secured clamp; for this purpose, it also comes with a bushing, it rotates freely and, firstly, guides the drill, and secondly, prevents the drill from breaking the clamp.
A very good invention, I have used it many times. It’s true that in addition to the standard rubber bands, it can be useful to have your own, additional ones. Sometimes the casting is slightly defective, or the pipe has defects...

You have a 44.4 mm pipe. this is 1 and 3\4 inches (1 inch - 25.4 mm.) You need to ask the store for such an inset-outlet.

suitable for gas if the pipe is in the ground, even on a polyvinyl pipe. A stainless steel faucet is immediately installed and drilled through the faucet under pressure only with a hand brace so that there is no spark.

To conveniently make tapping under water pressure you need:
      1. Clean the pipe and install the insert.
      2. Install the ball valve onto the insert.
      3. Place a reflector on the drill - a rubber disk made of thick hard rubber.
      4. Place a container to catch the leaking water.
      5. Drill through the open ball valve until water appears.
      6. When water appears, it will hit the reflector and flow into the container. Take precautions against splashing. Use a low-voltage or cordless drill.
      7. When drilling is complete, remove the drill and immediately close the tap.
      8. Profit.

I have a hard time believing your story. My threaded ball valve burst, it’s good that it’s on the side that goes after the valve. I turned off the water, took it to the store and bought a new ball valve. It was at the beginning of the 2000s, I waited two hours for the emergency signal. I realized that it was useless. I went to a neighbor and we decided to replace the faucet without shutting off the riser. There's no way to get into the basement. We only have one entrance to the basement for the whole house. I have the first floor, so I wasn’t afraid of flooding anyone. We prepared the tow, a new tap and let’s unscrew the old one from the pipe. I never thought in my life that there was such strong pressure in the cold water line. We almost suffocated; the water pressure apparently squeezed air into the ventilation system. The whole operation took us 5-6 seconds, but 40 liters of water ran into the toilet (that’s how all the wiring was) and the corridor. I can imagine how much water would come in if we drilled a hole in the pipe and then put on this clamp under high pressure. That's why I don't believe you.

A cut-in for a lock nut, a cheap pressure hose - couldn't they have just installed a valve just to be on the safe side?
