Making a convenient key for the drill chuck

Hi all! I will tell you how to make a very convenient key for the chuck of your drill, drilling machine or hammer drill. The original key that comes with the kit is extremely inconvenient. It is very difficult to tighten the drills and when changing the drilling tool frequently, your fingers begin to hurt. This problem can be easily solved in a short period of time if you make your own convenient key for the cartridge.
We try to securely tighten the drill in the chuck using the included key.

Due to the small lever, it is very difficult to create the proper force, and therefore to securely secure the tool. As a result, due to excessive force, unpleasant pain appears in the hand.

It is necessary to cut off the head of the original key, but not at the root, but at a distance of approximately 5-7 mm. To do this, use a marker to mark the cut location.

Holding the key with pliers, we saw off the head with a grinder. If you have a vice, use it, as this method is extremely dangerous.

Next, you will need a spanner wrench, into the hole of which the sawn-off head can be inserted as close as possible. I took 8, I don’t need it that much, especially since the second half of it will remain working.

We fix it with arc welding.

We beat the scale with a hammer after welding. We polish it to a shine with a grinding wheel on a grinder.

We test it: it tightens the cartridge very well, it’s just a song!

It's a shame that I suffered for a long time with a regular key. I recommend that you do the same.
As a result of the longer lever, you can easily create a good tightening force without unnecessary strain on yourself. Enjoy it friends! Very comfortably!

Why is it so difficult to put a suitable size tube on the wrench shank?
Well, or since there is welding, then just make a shank of the required length???

Keyless chuck, it is NOT FOR the drill. Its main purpose is a BIT with several edges!!! Of course, you can clamp a drill and even drill a hole with it, but only in SOFT material - wood, for example. But in metal, difficulties will arise even with aluminum.

I don't agree! I have been using a Makita two-speed impact drill with a quick-release chuck for several years. I easily drilled steel up to 10 mm without the drill slipping in the chuck! The chuck is designed for drills up to 12 mm, what kind of 12 mm bits can we talk about!?

I calmly drilled a brick wall about 30 cm thick with a hammer drill with a quick-release chuck. Everything worked great. I also drilled into metal, but somehow I didn’t have to drill into wood. It is the old mechanics who do not recognize quick-release chucks, just as the old plumbers did not recognize ball valves in their time.

Nowadays, many drills come with quick-release chucks. Apparently you haven’t entered the store since Soviet times.

I don’t recommend drilling metal with a quick-release clamp to anyone; it’s just torture.

Well, I did it and did it. It doesn’t matter that the trouble with all these keys is their initial and irreparable looseness.

Have any of your advisors ever wondered how to weld tool steel? It cannot be cooked by simple welding!!!

It is quite possible to weld, especially if you take a stainless steel electrode. The metal, of course, will lose its quality and become much more fragile in the heat-affected zone (the heating zone of the metal closely adjacent to the weld), but for such nonsense it will do just fine!
I agree with the first comment. If you have already taken up welding to improve such a wrench, it is easier to weld a small rod or an electrode bent in half without coating (4 or 5 mm).

I made it simpler by hammering a copper tube of the appropriate diameter onto all the keys. I chose the length that was convenient for work.
