With even basic tools you can make almost anything. To do this, you need to use your imagination and allocate a little more time than when performing similar work on specialized machines or devices. One example of non-standard solutions is making a shovel handle using an electric drill.
Materials and tools:
- block 50x50 mm;
- hardwood block 60x40 mm;
- a circular saw;
- hand plane;
- drill;
- feather drill for wood 35 mm;
- a pair of strong clamps.
Making cuttings
To grind the handle, you need to assemble the jig with a guide. For this, 2 bars 60x40 mm are used. A through hole is made in them with a feather drill, the diameter of which corresponds to the thickness of the desired cutting. The example uses a 35mm nib. A hole is made at the edge of the block to cut off one of the edges. In this case, the cutting blanks will not jam.
One drilled block is placed at the edge of the table. It is positioned with the cut edge up. A knife from a hand plane is placed on it.The blade is positioned at an angle so that the gap narrows towards the edge of the tabletop. Its cutting edge is located above the middle of the hole. From above, the knife and block are pressed to the table with a clamp.
The second block will be clamped with a clamp to the tabletop at an arbitrary distance from the first. His task is to center the workpiece so that it does not play along the length. It is better to place this block after the cutting has been ground down to the middle.
To make the handle, a 50x50 cm beam is used. Using a circular saw, you need to cut its edges at 45 degrees, giving it a roundness. One end of the workpiece is turned into a wedge with a plane so that it can fit into the hole on the block with a knife. At the second end of the rail, a shallow longitudinal slot is made into which the blade of a feather drill is pressed.
The pointed end of the workpiece is inserted into a block with a knife. The drill shank fixed on its second side is clamped in the drill chuck. Next, turning on the drill, you need to gradually put pressure on the workpiece, pushing it through the beam. As soon as it reaches 40-50%, the cutting should be inserted into the second block to provide an additional support point. When the edge of the workpiece with the clamped drill reaches the plane blade, you need to stop. The remaining non-rounded part should be cut off.
In this way, of course, you won’t be able to make many cuttings for sale, but for your needs this is a completely effective device. If you work little by little, the drill will not overheat, so making cuttings will not harm the tool.
