A compressor from an old refrigerator can be converted into a vacuum pump. The latter is a very useful thing when performing various jobs, for example, stabilizing wooden tool handles or making a small vacuum press for assembling film furniture facades.

Basic materials:

  • refrigerator compressor;
  • 2 tees with internal thread;
  • 2 fittings per hose;
  • barrel;
  • pressure gauge with adapter for the diameter of the tees;
  • tap;
  • plywood;
  • hose;
  • fumlenta;
  • clamps.

When assembling the pump, you can use components for 1/4 or 3/8 inch threads. You will also need several corner pieces, bolts and nuts.

We cut the compressor tubes, leaving them 3-5 cm long.

A platform is cut out of plywood to accommodate the compressor.

It can be varnished to protect it from dirt and moisture.

To carry the pump, it is worth welding a handle in the form of a frame. Its base is made from corners, and the posts and crossbar are made from any available rolled metal. The corners are drilled and screwed to the plywood from below.

A compressor is also attached to the base.

At the next stage of assembly, you need to connect the tees together using a barrel. Before this, the threads are sealed with fume tape. A pressure gauge is screwed into one of the vertical outlets of the tees through an adapter. A tap is installed at the adjacent exit.

To fix the tees on the plywood base, you need to make a fastening. To do this, 2 rings are cut out of the pipe, to which studs are welded. There is a hole in the rings for tightening screws. The result is clamps that operate on the principle of a clamp. They are screwed into plywood, and tees are already fixed into them.

Next, fittings are installed on the side open outlets of the tees. One of them is connected by a hose to the air intake of the compressor. The connection is sealed with clamps.

A hose with a suitable adapter is installed on the second fitting to solve the required problem.

If, for example, it is necessary to stabilize wood with a polymer, then the tube must be fixed to the metal lid of the jar with an inserted fitting.

Then the polymer is poured into the jar, the tool with a wooden handle is placed and it is closed. After turning on, the pump will draw air from the container, and the composition will penetrate into the empty pores of the wood. Before turning off the compressor, open the valve slowly to release the vacuum.

    You just need to be careful if you vacuum a regular jar like the one in the photo. It can explode, and the fragments will fly far. May cause injury and may damage objects. For safety, at least wrap the jar with tape in several layers with overlapping turns. It is better to use plastic or metal vessels. In the laboratory we pump out flat-bottomed vessels, but they are made of special thick glass and are always wrapped with cloth or protective mesh before pumping.

    Question to the author and everyone who has worked with this equipment: tell me, how long can this vacuum cleaner work? after all, during his lifetime, his working fluid is oil mixed with freon. but in this design, it turns out that it works dry. that is, the piston may jam very quickly. I want to repeat this model, but it will be a pity for the wasted time. Best regards, giko.

      Hello! You are absolutely right, the compressor will not last long as a vacuum sealer. From my own experience. At first it will work, but after a certain time (I have 3 hours of continuous operation) it stops pumping... I gave it up in the end

    You cannot cut the compressor tubes; copper shavings will get inside, which must not be allowed. The tubes are cut with a saw or file, then broken off.Don't forget to drain the old oil and fill it with fresh oil through the 3rd tube, which is not involved in inhalation and exhalation. I used about 250 mg of 10w40, maybe a little more up to 300 mg. It needs to be changed periodically and added regularly (the exhalation will be oily).
