How to easily make a chair

With the advent of matches and lighters, ancient methods of making fire were almost forgotten. At the same time, it’s worth knowing about them, because dry matches or a refilled lighter are not always at hand. Let's look at how to make a flint chair from a file and how to use it.

Materials:

• flat file with smooth side;
  
• piece of flint;
  
• tinder.

Making a simple flint

To make fire, you need a chair, which can be used as a flat file. For ease of carrying and storage, it is better to cut a small piece from it, the length of which is equal to the width of 4 fingers.

The ends of the section must be sanded, removing sharp edges, and the corners must be slightly rounded.
The working surface for making fire at the chair is the smooth side without grinding notches. Therefore, when processing a file, it is important to ensure that its surface is not damaged with a grinder or emery cloth.

To work with the chair, you need to prepare flint. Any large enough piece that is comfortable to hold in your hand will do.

The color of the flint does not matter. The best formation of sparks occurs when hitting a sharp edge of a mineral. To make it, you need to chop off the edge of the flint with a sharp blow. After the chip there should be a sharp edge. It can be straight or wavy.
To produce sparks, the hammer is taken in the fingers of the working hand. The flint is held in the second hand. Next, you need to hit the smooth side of the file against the sharp edge of the flint in a motion reminiscent of lighting a match. It is important that the entire length of the chair rubs against the flint. As a result of the right blow, many sparks appear. You can only notice them in the dark or while in the shade.



After practicing getting sparks, you can move on to ignition. Dry tinder is best for this. A small bunch of it is pressed with the thumb from above to the sharp edge of the flint. In this case, the tinder is positioned so that it does not catch on impact.
To ignite, you need to hit the edge of the silicon with a file. Some of the sparks will fall on the tinder, and if it is dry enough, it will ignite. This will happen after the first or several hits. After this, the tinder is carefully inflated and placed in ready-made kindling made from dry grass, thin twigs or shavings.
Such a simple flint works not only with perfectly prepared tinder, but also allows you to make fire from dry charcoal. Only in this case they are located at the bottom so that the sparks fall from above.
