Electric motorcycles are very profitable in terms of operation, but since they are a new product, they are still expensive. If the appearance of the equipment is not critical for you, then you can, at low cost, convert almost any light motorcycle or moped into an electric bike, thereby eliminating the need to buy gasoline.

How to convert a light motorcycle into an electric bike

The proposed option of converting a motorcycle into an electric bike involves maintaining the gearbox and making minimal design changes to it. Before installing the electric motor, you need to remove everything unnecessary from the motorcycle engine, making room for modernization.

It is necessary to prepare a place for connecting the electric motor shaft to the timing chain, using a standard sprocket for this.

Next, a thick steel or aluminum plate is cut out to install it as a spacer under the electric motor. It is attached to the remains of the gasoline engine through standard holes for screwing the cylinder.

The previously removed sprocket is installed on the electric motor shaft. A chain is placed on top of it and tension is given to mark the attachment of the electric motor to the plate. Holes are drilled according to the markings, and through them it is secured with bolts and nuts.

To power the electric motor, a battery is installed on the motorcycle frame. By removing unnecessary parts, there will be room for this. The battery is equipped with a universal controller. The headlight, brake lights and turn signals are connected to it. Naturally, the motorcycle’s on-board network is being modernized, since the old one is incompatible with the new 48V battery.

Thanks to the retention of the gearbox, the motorcycle can be driven at different speeds, despite the fact that the electric motor always produces the same speed. At first it will be unusual with the new controls, but you can get used to everything. The main thing is to drive carefully and smoothly, since the timing chain is still not as strong as the drive chain. The proposed motorcycle conversion solution is suitable for almost any bike. The main thing is to understand the idea itself in order to modify this design to suit the structural features of your gasoline engine.

The idea is good, but the motor is too small for a motorcycle; extra weight of an unnecessary drivetrain. And the main disadvantage is the expensive battery. For natives, it is not economically profitable to spend money on expensive modifications of motorcycles, scooters and periodic (in terms of time periods are not very long) purchase of new batteries. Alas...

This handjob is just for handjob. A battery of reasonable capacity and a controller will cost more than the same new bike. The timing chain, even from 0.75 kW, will not last long, the extra weight of the remaining transmission, which is useless on an e-bike of this kind. If you really want to get confused, you just need to throw out the standard engine and screw an electric one in its place. motor.

I think this advice on remodeling is a way to waste precious time and money for people who are underdeveloped in terms of thinking. As a result, you will get junk that is of little use for riding in the yard. Any moped with a gas engine is far superior in all technical parameters and driving characteristics to this bastard. My advice is to give your bike to the poor, buy yourself an electric scooter and be disappointed with envy while looking at your devoted old friend in someone else’s hands.

It would be much more interesting to make a hybrid electric cycle out of a motorcycle: separate the motor from the gearbox and turn it into an electric generator.Throw away the gearbox, and instead of the engine, install an electric wheel motor of 1-2 kW. Then you will need a very small battery; it will be used only during acceleration (overtaking), when the power of the electric generator is not enough. The motorcycle will still run on gasoline, but the engine will wear out less since the load on it from the electric generator will be stable, no over-throwing or extreme loads.
As a result, you will simultaneously receive a 2-3 kW mobile electric generator + a full-fledged motorcycle.
I’m almost sure that gasoline consumption will decrease (hybrid cars spend 1-2 liters instead of 7-8 per 100 km). The noise will be reduced and the range will be increased with the same gas tank volume.
