Over time, silverware becomes covered with plaque and dark spots. To restore its shine, various methods are used, both chemical and mechanical. Of course, it is most convenient to clean silver using chemical methods. Let's consider the most affordable of them, the reagents for which can be found in every kitchen.

What you will need:

  • container for the size of a silver product;
  • boiling water;
  • aluminium foil;
  • baking soda;
  • forceps;
  • dish sponge.

Silver cleaning

A sheet of regular baking foil is placed at the bottom of the container. It is important that there is a lot of it, so ideally use dishes with a wide bottom. If there is only a high container, then in this case it is worth placing foil on its inner walls.

Next, boiling water is poured into the container and baking soda is poured on top. For 3 liters of water you will need 1 cup of soda.

This proportion is used when cleaning silverware; for small jewelry, you can make a little solution, literally a glass, and use a correspondingly smaller container. When soda gets into boiling water, a violent chemical reaction similar to boiling will immediately begin.Without wasting time, you need to lower the silver object into the solution so that it is completely covered with water.

Periodically, the silver product must be turned over with tongs, since the chemical reaction on its surface occurs unevenly. The most active cleaning is observed on the foil side.
The silver is left in solution until the reaction is completed or its surface is clearly cleaned. If a lot of solution is prepared, then as a result of interaction with plaque it will practically not darken, so the product in a transparent liquid will be clearly visible. Next, the silver is removed from the still hot bath, and any stains remaining on it are easily wiped off with the hard side of the sponge. You should not wait until the water cools down, because then the remaining plaque will be more difficult to scrape off. In areas with difficult terrain where the sponge cannot reach, you can use an old toothbrush.

This method allows you to remove all plaque from a silver item, so it is not suitable for items with artistic blackening. When you need to clean plain silver dishes, even those with carvings or engravings, then baking soda and foil are ideal. This method does not harm silver; it only removes plaque. With its help, you can restore shine to dishes, chains, earrings, rings and other jewelry without wasting time or money.
