DIY zipper repair
A careful inspection will determine the cause of the malfunction. Check the integrity of the structure and the absence of mechanical obstacles. You can restore the ease of movement of the lock by treating the zipper teeth with a pencil lead. Choose “4M” or another fairly soft brand to simplify the application of lubricant to the surface.
You can move the large tooth of the “tractor” fastener with tweezers or using a suitable tool. If the correct position is not fixed, the zipper will have to be replaced.
Expanding the working area of the runner does not allow for normal tooth engagement. This defect is eliminated with pliers. Limit force to avoid damaging the lock.
A large paper clip replaces the standard pawl.
If the lock on the trousers “diverges”, a retainer is created from a steel ring. A few extra stitches strengthen the fastening of the button. When closed, such modernization is not visible.
Side cutters are used to replace a damaged lock.
The new slider is inserted through the bottom of the zipper. Excessive bending to the side damages the tooth attachment.
Additional recommendations
Graphite can stain light-colored clothing. Instead of a pencil use:
- paraffin;
- soap;
- petrolatum;
- olive oil;
- wax.
Lubrication extends the life of the lock. This preventative measure should be used regularly.
When working with pliers, strong mechanical impact can damage the varnish layer on the surface of the slider. Use a soft fabric pad to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the product.
A replacement slider is selected taking into account the dimensions and design features of the original. Take the damaged part to the store for comparison.
