If it is necessary to disassemble a wooden window frame for repairs, it is very difficult to dismantle the glass held in place by dried putty. It takes hours to scrape it off with a screwdriver, chisel or knife. You can speed up the process using a mechanized method by making a homemade, non-scratching glass cutter from a bolt.

What you will need:

  • bolt M10 or M12;
  • screwdriver;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • vice.

The thicker the bolt, the more effective the tool. But it is necessary that its rod can be clamped in the cam of the screwdriver chuck.

On its head you need to cut teeth with vertices on the edges. To do this, a cut is made with a hacksaw in front of one of the faces on the left. It must be led to the beginning of the rod. Then the hacksaw is moved to the left and an oblique cut is made towards the bottom of the previous one to cut out a wedge. As a result, a tooth will be formed from the face.

How to remove putty from a frame

When removed with a milling cutter, pieces of dry putty fly up. For this reason, it is imperative to use safety glasses. A mask or respirator would also be a good idea, since the dust from the putty contains antiseptics against mold, which are best not inhaled.
A homemade cutter is inserted into the screwdriver chuck. If its speed is regulated, then medium speed should be turned on. The cutter is placed against the putty and pressed firmly against the frame, while trying not to put pressure on the glass. When you turn on the speed, the teeth will begin to knock out the sealant, biting into it. Due to the dryness, it will fall off in pieces. It is more convenient to move from bottom to top when working.

The device of a homemade cutter allows you not to be afraid of ruining the glazing, since its end is flat and wide enough. But you need to try not to put pressure on the glass. If it is additionally secured with bent nails, they must be found and removed with pliers before starting work. They are not dangerous for a cutter, but if they bend under it in the wrong direction, they can split the glazing.
