One of the options for recycling PET bottles is to make roofing tiles from them. The peculiarity of this roof is its transparency, which makes it a good solution for technical rooms without electric lighting. It can also be used to cover greenhouses. Roofing made from bottles is many times more durable than any plastic film, and if you use recycled materials for its production, it will also be free.

The process of making tiles

To assemble roofing modules that imitate tiles, you need identical PET bottles, preferably straight ones without a pointed cone-shaped neck. The neck and bottom of each bottle are cut off as evenly as possible. The result should be a straight tube.

The resulting tube unfolds lengthwise. You should try to make the cut as smooth as possible.

After this, it is straightened and cut in half along the height. You need to get 2 identical waves.

At the next stage, it is necessary to make precise cuts, for which it is convenient to use a mat with marked markings. The cuts are the same for all workpieces. On one long side of the wave you need to cut notches parallel to the edge. They are made in increments of 2 cm. First, a 2 cm skip, then a 2 cm cut, etc. The notches are made with an indentation of 1 cm from the edge. When using a mat, they can be cut very quickly and accurately.

On the opposite side of the wave, perpendicular cuts 1 cm long are made. The interval between them is 2 cm.

Having prepared many blanks with the same parameters, you can proceed to their assembly.

To do this, you need to lean 2 waves against each other. One is placed with the concavity down, and the second up. After this, it is necessary to insert transverse spikes from one wave into the longitudinal cuts of the adjacent one.

Having connected two blanks, you need to attach the next part to any of them and attach it to them. In this way, the required number of strips of a certain length is prepared. They are then laid on the roof sheathing in the same way as slate. First, the bottom strip is mounted, then the next one is laid on it with a slight overlap. The strips are attached to the sheathing with a stapler, nails or self-tapping screws. Using bottles of different colors to make PET tiles, you can form various patterns on the roof.
