When there is very little left until the New Year, I want to bring this joyful moment a little closer. If you don’t bring the New Year closer, you can at least create a festive mood by decorating your home. And if you do the decoration yourself, you can also have a good time and enjoy it.

I suggest making a garland from salt dough that can be hung on a Christmas tree or on the wall.

New Year's garland made of salt dough

To do this, you will need to prepare salted dough from which you can sculpt.

You can make it by mixing one part fine salt, two parts plain wheat flour and cold water. For a glass of flour and half a glass of salt you need about 125 ml of water. Water must be added little by little so that the mass becomes elastic and smooth, but does not stick to your hands.

Place the finished dough in a bag and place it in the refrigerator if you are not going to sculpt it right away. While sculpting, take the dough a little at a time so that it does not dry out in the air. Make whatever figures you want. I made Christmas trees, snowmen, stars, months, shoes.

After this, you need to make holes in them, into which the thread will subsequently be threaded. Insert a toothpick or match into the hole. The hole should be slightly larger than the toothpick. After this, bake the figures in the oven. In this case, the figures must be placed in a cold oven so that the products heat up along with it. Drying time depends on the size of the product. They took 10-15 minutes to dry.
In this case, the figures need to be turned over so that they dry evenly.

Then you need to decorate the figures with watercolors or gouache after they have cooled. I did it like this.

After this you need to string them on a thread. I had a gold one and that's what I used. I strung several of the largest items on the main thread, and placed the rest on hanging threads at different levels. You can do it the way you like.
