A home handyman may need round wooden sticks for his work. Finding ready-made ones for sale is problematic, and not everyone has a lathe. Let's share a simple way to make pegs from improvised materials.

Materials and tools

The main material will be square blocks of hard wood. To make the tooling matrix, we use a wooden block measuring approximately 250x120x40 mm.

For work we use the tool:
  • desktop drilling machine (you can get by with an electric drill);
  • dies are metric or inch, the thread of which determines the diameter of future products, for example: 1/4 inch will have a diameter of approximately 11 mm, 3/8 inch - 16 mm, 1/2 inch - 21 mm;
  • core drills for wood, with a diameter corresponding to the outer dimensions of the dies;
  • angle grinder (grinder);
  • hammer, chisel.
Auxiliary materials you will need:
  • hex head self-tapping bolts;
  • a piece of profile pipe about 40 mm;
  • M6x25 bolt with nut;
  • steel bar with a diameter of 8-12 mm or a small bolt;
  • washer.

How to Make a Jig to Make Long, Round Wooden Sticks

Cut off the block.

Using appropriate core drills, we make slots in it equal to the thickness of the dies.

Use a 30 mm drill to select the middle of the holes. If necessary, process on both sides.

Using a chisel, carefully make indentations into which the dies will be placed.

To fix them, we drill side holes in the block.

Using a grinder, we cut the screws to size and grind the end to a cone.

We insert and fix the dies in the matrix.

We fix the finished equipment in a bench vice.

We clamp a square block in the chuck of an electric drill and pass it through the threaded hole with reciprocating movements until a round profile is obtained.

We will make special equipment for large bars. To do this, we weld a washer and a rod to the end of the square pipe. We drill a 6 mm hole in the pipe wall and weld the nut coaxially. We cut off the side edges of the head of the M6 bolt for ease of manual fixation: the clamp for the block is ready!

We assemble the device, fix the block in the chuck and repeat the processing.

It should be noted that the technology does not guarantee ideal cleanliness of the processing of sticks. If a smooth surface is required, it is necessary to carry out an abrasive treatment with sandpaper, after again clamping the peg in the chuck of the electric drill.

A couple of tips

  • The tree will easily fit into the hole of the die if you first slightly sharpen the end of the block.
  • The quality of machining of the bar depends on the speed of rotation and the cleanliness of the thread.
