When welding thin metal, the techniques used when joining massive workpieces do not work. The energy of the electric arc simply burns through the thin metal and instead of a weld, holes are formed. But if you know the secrets of experienced welders, then even a beginner will be able to cope with welding metal 1 mm thick.

Thin metal welding processes using the secrets of experienced welders

When working with thin metal, the welding current should be as low as possible, as should the diameter of the electrodes. This helps reduce arc length and contact patch, allowing welding to occur at lower temperatures. However, this may not be enough to prevent burning through thin metal.

Experienced welders use another opportunity for high-quality welding of metal 1 mm thick - the trajectory of the end of the electrode during the welding process, which allows to significantly reduce the temperature in the working area.

All methods of welding thin metal involve preparatory work: the edges of the workpieces being welded must be carefully prepared - rust, grease and any other deposits must be removed using a grinder, a metal brush, etc. The edges are shifted as much as possible. All this will make the welding process easier.

Method 1

After igniting the arc, it is necessary to make reciprocating movements with the end of the electrode along the joint being welded. Moreover, the movements should be fast, but not fussy, with some slowdown upon contact with the end of an already formed weld.

As a result, the joint areas that have not yet been connected will be prepared for the welding process, and part of the arc energy will be transferred to the already formed welding seam, which will protect the thin metal being welded from burning through.

Method 2

It is necessary to move the end of the electrode in small jumps in the direction of the joint to be welded. In this case, the “jump” should be low so as not to extinguish the arc. This movement of the electrode allows you to periodically reduce the temperature of the welding process and protect the thin metal from burning through.

Method 3

Continuous movement of the electrode along the joint being welded at the highest possible speed without changing the arc length. In this case, the rapid movement of the electrode does not allow the thin metal to overheat, which protects the metal from burning through. The speed of movement of the electrode along the joint is limited only by preventing metal penetration.

Method 4

Circular rotation of the electrode with movement along the welded seam. In this case, a larger welding width is captured and the arc energy is distributed over a larger area, which reduces overheating of the thin metal and protects it from burns.
