Eddy currents, also known as Foucault currents, occur in electrical conductors when they are exposed to a magnetic field. The principle of their operation is used in induction furnaces. You can clearly see what eddy currents are capable of at home by assembling a simple device using permanent magnets. Their field can literally boil water.

Materials:

  • Electric motor 2700 rpm;
  • plywood 10 mm;
  • any trimmings of boards, bars;
  • neodymium magnets 20x3 mm – 10 pcs. -
  • self-tapping screws, bolts.

The manufacturing process of the device and its application

The device is a platform made of scraps of lumber, onto which the electric motor is vertically mounted with the shaft up. A plywood disk with neodymium magnets glued in a circle is clamped onto the shaft.

The latter are placed with alternating polarity. On the side of the sole there is a vertical bar for fixing attachments.

The power of neodymium magnets is such that their magnetic field attracts to one degree or another any metals, not just steel. If you start the engine to create turbulence in the magnetic field, it is possible to make even an aluminum disk on an axis, placed nearby, rotate.Any conductive objects will heat up under the influence of the device.

You can place a metal container of water over the disk with magnets, and it will boil. In order for the heating process to be clearly visible, the liquid in the experiment was collected in a glass container, but glued with silicone to an aluminum base.

Even in this case, the water boils from the hot base.

If we bring a coil closer to a rotating magnetic disk, we get the simplest generator. The presence of electricity in the coil can be easily checked by attaching it to the ends LEDs. They will start to glow.
