When hiking or fishing, a tent will protect you from precipitation, wind and midges, but not from the cold, and this is not only uncomfortable, but also unsafe for health. If you take with you a very compact heater based on an old oil filter, then the tent will be warm and you can warm your hands in the cold. To assemble it, you do not need any specific skills, and the materials will be worthless parts of an old oil filter.

Will need

Materials:

  • old oil filter;
  • 4 pan head screws;
  • candle or dry alcohol tablets.

Tools: sharpening machine, napkins or rags, marker, core and hammer, drilling machine, vice, drill and tap, knife, grinder, etc.

The process of converting an old oil filter into a hand warmer or tent

We remove the rubber gasket from the filter and grind off the rolled edge that holds the bottom in the housing on a grinding machine.

This will allow you to disassemble the filter into its component parts.

Using cloth napkins or rags, clean the oil filter parts from grease and other contaminants. Even a quick inspection shows that the filter parts seem to be intended for assembling the heater. Only some modernization is needed. Let's start by assembling the base of the heater, which will consist of a bottom and a body. The bottom already has holes for air to enter the heater to maintain combustion. All that remains is to make four holes in the outer annular recess, evenly spaced around the circumference, and cut threads into them.

We cut the cardboard filter element with a knife and remove the mesh cylinder, which gives the unit the necessary rigidity. We also remove oil and dirt from it with a napkin or rag.

In the top part of the lid, in the center of all the recesses intended for the convenience of screwing and unscrewing the filter, we drill radial holes. They will be needed to ensure proper convection inside the heater.

Using a grinder and a peeling attachment, remove paint from the surface of the oil filter housing so that it does not burn when using the heater for its intended purpose, as this will release unpleasant odors and harmful gases.

Place the bottom on a flat surface and screw four screws with semicircular heads into the threaded holes until they stop at the base. This is necessary to ensure that the heater is stable during operation.

Place the second bottom of the oil filter concentrically on the first. It will serve as a stand for placing a candle or dry alcohol tablet. Cover the heat source with a cylindrical mesh.At the end, we close the entire assembly with a large lid-housing.

Let's check the resulting heater in action. To do this, remove the housing cover, the cylindrical mesh and light the candle wick or a tablet of dry alcohol.

We install the removed elements in reverse order.

After a short time, the outer cover heats up and becomes an intense source of heat, which is enough to heat the tent throughout the night.

After use, it can be easily disassembled for convenient carrying.
