The season for picnics, hiking and fishing trips is in full swing, and that means it's time to sort through your backpack with camping stuff. Repair something, add something. Selecting equipment for a hike, especially if there is a long trek ahead, with a stop for lunch and a subsequent overnight stay, is a very scrupulous matter and does not tolerate haste and fuss. Every little detail is important here, right down to the pin or nail. As a lover and connoisseur of hiking, I can’t imagine a hike without meat stew and scrambled eggs cooked over a fire. In order to hang the pot over the fire, it was necessary to chop two spears and a crossbar. And these are at least two rather thick trunks from alder or willow bushes. It's a shame, of course, but nothing can be done. I simply placed the frying pan on the coals. In order not to cause damage to nature, but also not to deprive myself of hot food, I decided to assemble a simple holder for a pot and a frying pan, from metal leftover building materials.

It only takes 15 minutes, but the sheep are safe and the wolves are fed!

Will need

  • Drill.
  • 7mm drill bit.
  • A hairpin, or a long bolt, 6mm thick and 15-20cm long.
  • Three nuts for the prepared stud, and two washers.
  • Metal clamping corner.
  • Square tube, metal, 3x3x500mm. You can have a profile.

Holder assembly

The most “labor-intensive” part of the job in this story is drilling the metal pipe! So let's start with that. We install a 7mm drill bit in the drill and make a through hole, stepping back a couple of centimeters from the end.

Next, we thread the pin into the hole on one side, thread a washer onto the thread inside the pipe, and screw the nut onto the thread so that the end of the thread protrudes on the other side by a couple of centimeters. This is what it should look like:

If the thread on your stud or bolt is long enough, you can simply tighten it the same way on both sides of the pipe. Now let's start installing the corner. If the thread of the stud is too large for the holes in the angle, then expand the required hole with a drill.

The required hole in the corner should be selected based on the height of your frying pan. Measure the height of the sides of the pan - the bend of the corner should be at the same distance from the protruding end of the pin. If a suitable hole is not found, we drill a new one in the right place. We screw the corner with this hole onto the protruding end of the pin; put on the washer and tighten it with a nut. We screw another nut onto the remaining end of the thread so that the distance between the nuts corresponds to the thickness of the side of the frying pan - between these nuts the side of the frying pan will cling. Trying on a frying pan. If it is too wide and does not sit firmly on the corner, then you can screw a metal plate onto the end of the corner, like this:

You can screw a nut onto the opposite end of the pin, on the reverse side where the pot will be hung, or flatten it with a hammer and bend it so that the pot does not slip off during use.

The structure is ready. If you have a roomy enough backpack, you can transport it in this form, but I prefer it disassembled.

To assemble the holder in the forest, you do not need any tools. After all, it’s not an elephant we’ll be hanging there! It's time to test the design. Using the butt of an ax, we drive the pipe into the ground to the required height and prepare kindling.

We light a fire, set up a frying pan, and cook food.

It turned out great! By adjusting the height of the pipe in the ground, you can avoid food burning.

Well, the side for the frying pan was tested with scrambled eggs.

Now it's the bowler's turn; Let's boil water for coffee.

And here there are no force majeures; half a liter of water boiled as usual, in 12-15 minutes.

The entire preparation of breakfast took me no more time than usual.

And most importantly, there was no need to cut the spears again from fresh branches or trunks. In the same way, for example, when fishing, if you line the fireplace with large pebbles, making some kind of hearth, then you can stick this holder into the center of the fire and cook in a frying pan and in a pot at the same time. While the fish soup is cooking, you can easily fry a small fish with egg and onion. Stores for fishermen and hunters sell prefabricated metal tripods for hanging a pot over the fire, but these three tubes with a chain and a hook cost, in my opinion, quite expensive for such a small thing. We assembled the holder completely free of charge, from construction rubbish, and this holder turned out to be more functional than the same purchased tripod for a pot, to which you can’t even attach a frying pan.And most importantly, when leaving, do not forget to fill the fire with water or throw sand.

Also, clean up trash and leftovers.
