How to make a drill from old gears and leftover metal

We select 2 old gears suitable in size and number of teeth and put them in order, removing rust and various deposits.

We carefully weld a rolling bearing along the outer ring to the central hole of one gear without overheating.

We insert a hex nut of suitable size into the hole of the other gear and secure it there also by welding, removing the sagging with a grinder.

We vertically insert a piece of reinforcement of suitable diameter into the central hole of the bearing and weld it, being careful not to disturb the mobility of the bearing.

We pass the bolt through the nut and fix it with another nut, which we weld to the bolt for this purpose.

We shorten the bolt rod protruding from the nut and place it perpendicularly to a piece of reinforcement at such a height that the gears engage, and weld it in this position. We check the complete engagement of the teeth and the mutual rotation of the gears without jamming.

We heat the round rod at a certain distance from one end and bend it at an angle of 90 degrees. We shorten the bend to the required size and weld it to the gear with the bolt so that the long side of the rod makes a right angle with the axis of rotation of the gear.

We weld another rod perpendicularly to the end of the rod welded to the gear. We put a nut on it to the welding point and fix it there. Next, we put a piece of plastic pipe and another nut on the rod, which we also weld to the rod so that the plastic tube can rotate freely on the rod between the nuts. Cut off the part of the rod protruding from the nut flush with the nut.

The result is a handle with which you can rotate both gears in perpendicular planes.

We insert a screw head adjusted to size into the central hole of the gear with the bearing and weld it there.

We cut off part of the bolt shaft, leaving the required length, to which we screw and tighten the collet chuck of the drill. To the end of the piece of reinforcement welded to the inner hole of the bearing, we also weld a piece of reinforcement perpendicularly.

As a result, we get a homemade hand drill, with which you can easily drill small holes in metal and quite large ones in wood.

To do this, it is enough to fix the drill in the chuck, create pressure along the axis of the tool and rotate the handle, creating rotation of the chuck with the drill clamped in it.

plz, don’t be offended = you have a photo NOT A COLLET CHUCK, BUT A JAW CHUCK = in a COLLET chuck, the replacement tool is fixed using REPLACEABLE COLLETS having different diameters

And not gears, but sprockets for chain drives...
