Bending reinforcement using means not intended for this purpose is physically difficult, time-consuming, inaccurate and unsafe. With some metalworking skills, you can make a modified rebar bender designed to bend any rebar easily, quickly and safely.

Will need

To manufacture a variable reinforcement bender, the following materials and products are needed:
  • one large and two small ball bearings;
  • round pipes of different diameters;
  • equal angle;
  • square and rectangular pipes;
  • fragment of a ploughshare;
  • bolts with nuts;
  • fittings;
  • a metal sheet;
  • metal plate.

You will have to work with a grinder, a pendulum band saw, welding, wrenches and a screwdriver, as well as use a vice and clamp.

The manufacturing process of a modified reinforcement bender

How to make a universal reinforcement bender

We cut a ring from the pipe with a width equal to the height of the outer ring of the bearing. We clamp it in a vice and cut out the cross plate.

We place the bearing in the cut ring, squeeze it with a clamp and weld the ends.

We cut two equal fragments from the corner, wrap them around the end of the square pipe and lightly grab it from the end.

We round the corners so that they fit into the inner ring of the bearing and weld them to each other.

Remove the protective rings from the bearing. We take out the square pipe from the corners and weld the corners to the ring. We make sure that the square pipe fits freely and moves around the corners, and the bearing rotates easily.

Cut six bushings of equal length from the round pipe. We rest their ends against a flat surface, press them against each other and weld them together on both sides.
Cut a piece of the required length from the rectangular pipe. We lay it flat on two plates so that its end rests against the center of the bearing ring. We press the clip of six bushings vertically against the profile pipe so that the outer bushing rests against the bearing. In this position, we weld these parts, as well as the annular housing with the outer ring of the bearing.

We cut out two identical L-shaped plates from a piece of the ploughshare and weld them on the sides of two square pipes stacked on top of each other. In this case, the gap between the vertical elements of the L-shaped plates should not be obscured.

We insert an assembly of two profile pipes and L-shaped plates into the square of two corners inside the bearing. We clamp the ends of the pipes in a vice.

Insert a bolt into the second bushing from the bottom, onto which we put two small bearings on top, and tighten with a nut.
We insert the lever into the rectangular pipe. We place the end of the reinforcement between the elements of the L-shaped plates, turn the lever counterclockwise and bend the reinforcement to a given angle or even into a loop.
How to make a universal reinforcement bender

We insert a square pipe with a side hole into the square of two corners, and into the bushing closest to the bearing - a bolt with a piece of round pipe, tightened with a nut.

At the upper end we put on a unit from a horizontally located section of a rectangular pipe and four plates welded to the pipe from below, forming a square groove.
We insert a lever into the horizontal pipe, and a round rod into the hole of the vertical square pipe. By rotating the lever clockwise, we make a square spring with rounded corners from a straight rod.

If you put a round piece with a hole at the bottom on a square vertical pipe and, aligning them, insert the fittings and start rotating the lever, you will get a round spring.
To make a bend with varying curvature, we take a round disk cut from a metal sheet. We weld to it, on one side, a curved plate with a variable radius of curvature, on the other, to the hole in the center, a piece of round pipe and also a square pipe around it.

We weld a small but strong plate to the center of the rod at an angle, and a horizontal section of a rectangular pipe to the end. We insert the rod into the hole in the center of the disk. We fix the disk with the curved plate in the bearing.

Using a bolt and nut, we fix two small bearings coaxially into the sleeve farthest from the large bearing. Between the beginning of the figured plate on the disk and the plate on the rod, we place the end of a round or faceted rod and begin to rotate the disk using a lever.
As a result, the rod, resting against the outer ring of the bearing, will begin to bend according to the shape specified by the shaped plate welded to the disk.
