Do-it-yourself six-electrode candle from a regular one

There are three-electrode spark plugs on the market. They are not cheap and are not sold for all engine models. Many who have used multi-electrode spark plugs in their practice note more stable engine operation at both low and high speeds. In this master class you will learn how to convert a regular spark plug into a multi-electrode spark plug.

Converting the spark plug into a six-electrode spark plug

It is highly advisable to use a new spark plug that has not been used. We fix it in a vice. Using wire cutters, bite off the side electrode.

We place the threaded body into 6 equal parts. To limit the length of the cut, we wrap the thread of the candle with a piece of electrical tape. We cut the slots with a grinder.
For this operation you need to use small circles, scraps that are usually thrown away. They will be much more convenient to work with.

We make six cuts, each time loosening the vice and turning the candle over.

We remove bends and chips from the inside with a thin screwdriver, which usually form during sawing.

Using pliers, bend the electrodes towards the center, controlling the same distance of 1-1.5 mm with a probe.

Using a flap sanding wheel, we grind down the thick edges, making them sharper towards the center.

We reduce the graininess of the circle and bring the side electrodes to a shine.

Tests

Let's make a visual comparison of the performance of our sample with a regular candle and a three-electrode one.
Regular spark plug:

Self-made six-electrode:

The discharge power is noticeably higher, but the point here is not in the design itself, but in the fact that this specimen was made from a candle with low internal resistance, and not from a standard design.
I don’t know how to do it for a car, but making such a candle for a motorcycle is very good.

You don't have to do that. The car will drive worse and there is a possibility that the ignition system will fail

I'm not a car guy, but I think the gap is too big

The real gap is not 1.5 but 3-5mm.This will install the distributor cap, coil, and electronic ignition for sure.

All these games with candles are fraught with serious consequences. A friend of mine on a Gazelle had a piece of the central electrode insulator break off (as an autopsy later showed), on ordinary spark plugs, not sawn, it rang for about three seconds, he didn’t even have time to turn it off. The piston jams and the connecting rod breaks off, as a result the fist of “friendship” is a block for ejection + repair. Now there are many options for choosing candles, there are no problems, so I don’t see the point in “collective farming”.

the gap is not correct to the insulator 1mm and to the electrode 3mm

The principle of operation of the spark plug is the same as the standard one; there will be one breakdown, between the central electrode and one from the body taps, until the gap burns out. The most important thing in a spark plug is the gap, and if it is beyond 1.5 mm, then under pressure the spark plug will not break through such a gap, and the breakdown will occur between the fastening of the high-voltage wire and the spark plug body, and there is at least 3-4 cm. That’s because If there is a large gap, the coil, distributor, and switch burn. It’s easier to buy new spark plugs, even cheap ones, and set the required gap for the car, and after every 10,000 km, check the gap and there won’t be any problems. Who doesn’t want to bother so often, then buy iridium ones, you need to look at them after 80,000-90,000 km, since iridium does not burn out that easily.
