Without a vice, many jobs will become difficult to complete, while others will remain unrealized. The price of an ordinary bench vice is from 5,000 rubles, which is a considerable amount. It makes sense to make them yourself, because this does not require special skills, tools and materials.

Will need

The basic material needed to make a vice can be found among the trash:
equilateral angle; a piece of metal sheet; small steel strip; tape and writing paper.
The following components will cost us a minimal amount:
7 identical nuts and one large washer; lead screw; 4 mounting kits (nut, bolt, washer); paint in an aerosol can.
The following tools and accessories should also be available:
Bulgarian; welding; drill; clamps and pliers; screwdriver and brush; square and pencil.

Work progress on the vice

We weld a square pipe from two equal angles.

From the same corner we make elements of a square cross-section guide, in which the profile pipe would move freely and the gaps would be minimal.

From a sheet of metal 5-6 mm thick, cut out a square of the required dimensions according to the markings.

We remove burrs and trim the edges.
We try on the square plate, pipe and guide elements in the order in which they will be in the actual product.
We weld the guide parts, and to minimize the gaps, we place writing paper folded several times on the square pipe.

Carefully process the surface of the guide.
On one side of the square pipe, we cut out a longitudinal through slit from the end, not reaching the second end by 3 cm.

We mark a square plate and weld a strip of metal in the center parallel to the two sides, and two closed nuts in the middle.

We screw the lead screw into them. Once again we check the accuracy of installation of the nuts and screw and, covering the thread with a cloth, weld the nuts to each other and to the strip.

Move the screw to one side as far as it will go and cut off the excess. We clean the welding seams.
We make sure that the lead screw and the square plate move freely in the square tube with the bottom cutout.

We install a guide on top of the pipe and weld it securely to the plate with a double seam, cleaning the scale with a screwdriver and a wire brush. At the end we clean the seams with a grinder.

We round the edges of one of the nuts, screw it onto the lead screw to the desired location and weld it there, protecting the threads from metal splashes with a corner.
We place and weld a U-shaped plate onto the front end of the pipe with the lead screw.

We install a large washer on the screw, screw on the nut and use pliers to grab the end and check its movement.

We weld a stop on top of the square pipe. Screw in the lead screw to the limiter.
In this position, we weld the movable jaw from the angle to the pipe and the fixed one to the guide, holding it in a closed position with pliers.

After this, we disassemble the units and strengthen the jaws by welding rigid stops on the back side along the entire width. Carefully clean the seams with a grinder.

From the remainder of the lead screw we make a gate for moving the jaws, removing the threads from the surface, but leaving the ends for screwing on the nuts.
We unscrew one nut and put a third one on the handle, which we weld to the end of the lead screw, and the outer ones to the ends of the gate.

We turn the square plate over and drill holes in the corners for fastening to the workbench.

We disassemble the vice, cover the square pipe with the movable jaw with paper and tape, and paint all the components.
We make holes in the tabletop, first attach the base with a guide unit and a fixed jaw, into which we insert a movable element, and use the lead screw to close the jaws. The vice is ready for use.
