How to pierce a glass bottle with a nail

A non-standard souvenir in the form of a glass bottle pierced with a nail cannot be made in the usual way. All sorts of improvised gaskets, which should miraculously prevent splitting, do not save the glass. When you hit a nail against a glass bottle with a hammer, there is a 99.99% chance that it will break. But there is another way.

In fact, the two through holes will be drilled rather than punched. But since glass is an extremely fragile material, even this operation must be prepared. To work you will need:
  • Glass bottle;
  • Electric drill;
  • Nail + drill + cutter = same diameter;
  • A piece of plywood;
  • PET water bottle;
  • Plastic basin 5 liters;
  • Rubber band for money + marker.

Instead of plywood, any rigid sheet material: fiberboard, MDF, chipboard, or even a piece of plastic wall panel measuring 10 by 20 cm will do.
The cutter is needed with diamond coating, preferably cylindrical in shape.
TIP: if the diameter of the cutter is smaller than the diameter of the nail, then the hole made can be carefully enlarged.

Tips and tricks

Cooling the contact point between the cutter and the bottle prevents glass from breaking and glass dust from flying away.
To prevent the bottle from spinning in a plastic basin, place a damp cloth under it.
The finished holes can be sealed with tape, or filled with silicate glue, and then show the trick by piercing a glass bottle with a nail.

    What if you just pour water into a basin and drill underwater?

      I saw such bottles nailed to a tree back in my childhood in the 70s, when there was no trace of such drills!

          They sculpted a ring bead from plasticine, poured in turpentine and drilled with a drill bit tipped with Pobedit using a hand drill.

        As a child, we played with bottles filled with water, blowing into the neck and getting a stream of water from the hole at the bottom. I remember that I managed to drill such holes in bottles with simple drills, although using a hand drill for this. The rotation speed of the drill was low, the bottle did not heat up and did not crack.

    Insert the handle of the pliers into the neck of the bottle and press its end tightly against the glass from the inside. In this position, carefully tap the corner of the back of the hammer at the corresponding point on the outside of the bottle. The glass will begin to crumble until a hole is formed. Repeat the operation on the opposite side of the bottle. The holes will end up with small chips, but this will only enhance the effect of a hammered nail. Similar “tricks” were once performed by drivers of “virgin” battalions, winning a bet over a bottle of vodka against inexperienced colleagues. The advertisement was a glass bottle nailed to the side of the car. Greetings to the “virgin lands” of the GSVG 1978!

    Much easier...This was done before my eyes in 1980 - the bottle was placed on some kind of grain and, first on one side, then on the other, holes were carefully punched with light tapping using an ordinary core. Then the bottle was solemnly nailed to a piece of wood with a long nail. Like someone who had lost a bet, I ran for the bottle. All.
