I admit right away: this idea is not new, and I do not encroach on its authorship. But articles, videos, even entire master classes on this topic had one significant drawback: the completeness of the information. They were all scanty, gnawed and incomplete, from the opera “here’s an idea for you, and then figure it out yourself.” Whereas I like the most complete, chewed ones, which you can simply take and repeat. Therefore, having collected the information, compiled it, I made myself such a barbecue from a freon cylinder: now I hasten to share my experience.
What you need to prepare
So, you will need a balloon: You can buy plenty of them for 50-100 rubles from air conditioners or craftsmen who service refrigeration equipment.
Definitely empty: open the valve and release the residue.
You also need to print this picture twice: you don’t want to manually mark dozens of holes later.
In addition you will need:
- the door handle, definitely wooden: it will get very hot when cooking under the lid;
- M4 screws, with a recessed head, washers, nuts - all about 25 pcs. everyone;
- M6 furniture screws 100 mm long – 4 pcs;
- nuts and washers for them, also M6 – 8 pcs;
- two loops, small, 3-4 cm wide;
- frog clasp – 1 piece;
- a small corner or just a piece of metal 2-3 mm thick and measuring 2 by 5 cm for a stopper.
Then from the tools: drill-driver; drills - 4, 6 and 15 mm: the last one I took stepped; a grinder with a cutting wheel (one was enough) and a grinding wheel; core and hammer; keys for assembly, 7 and 13; masking and double-sided tape; roulette; marker; scissors.
You can even do without a bench vice: Just an anvil is enough.
Making a barbecue from a freon cylinder
Separate the handle from the cylinder. We pre-drill the spots for spot welding, or simply loosen it - decide for yourself. Then we unscrew (break out, cut off, depending on the cylinder) the valve.
Yes, I completely forgot, the main tool is not a drill or grinder, but an inverted stool. It makes cutting and drilling a round cylinder as convenient as possible; it does not roll or move anywhere.
Let's mark it. The circumference of the container is 77 cm, optimal for frying meat would be 2 to 3. Apply tape and cut. But do not touch the FLAT surface of the cylinder, where it is rounded. It should remain one piece until all the holes are drilled.
Then glue the printed, cut out matrices and fill the holes,
drill them. There are no hinge holes on the die as they may vary, so mark according to location. Definitely BEFORE you cut the container completely: this way you can raise the skewer a little and still cook with the lid closed. Also, don’t forget about the holes for the frog: there will be only one, so we place it closer to the center.
But if we drill holes in the back of the grill for skewers, then we make triangular slits in the front part.
Therefore, we cut the balloon (don’t be afraid to bend it, the halves will still fit one another) to the end, and now we make them.
We remove burrs: the steel is soft, there will be plenty of them. We cut the handle removed from the cylinder in half (one will just close the hole from the removed valve) and drill holes in it. We mark the answers,
and collect.
Then we screw on the hinges, the stopper,
frog,
and also a pen
to the lid.
We “marry” both halves,
bend the stopper slightly upward so that the barbecue does not fall back,
and screw the legs from furniture bolts.
Now, in the place so that the lid of the grill is fastened tightly, we drill and screw the mating part of the frog.
The freon cylinder grill is ready. Moreover, when going into nature with it, you can put it inside as a supply of firewood and coals,
as well as the utensils necessary for preparing aromatic kebabs or juicy kebab.
At the same time, you can use both classic skewers and a grill grate for this. Just choose the size of the last 20 by 25 cm to use the space of the compact barbecue as efficiently as possible.
