For lovers of spicy salted mackerel, the dish “Murmansk lard” would be an excellent option. This fish can be easily prepared at home; it is prepared quickly, easily and without brine. This mackerel can easily be called a budget dish, but even gourmets will appreciate its taste.
Mackerel “Murmansk Salo” can be prepared in advance and stored in the freezer. It is perfect for dinner with potatoes and salad, as well as for a holiday table.

Minimum set of products:


  • - mackerel s/m – 2 pcs. (fillet – 620 g);
  • - salt – 2 tsp. without slide;
  • - sugar – 1/2 tsp;
  • - coriander – 1/2 tsp;
  • - ground black pepper – 1/2 tsp. or to taste;
  • - dry ground garlic - 1 tsp. or fresh – 4 cloves.

We start preparing the dish by preparing the fish.
It’s better to cook two carcasses at once, eat one right away, and leave the second as a reserve.
We choose high-quality mackerel without damage. The wider the back of the fish, the fatter it will be. It is necessary to gut the mackerel when it is slightly frozen, so it will be easier to fillet it.

Prepare the spices. All spices must be ground to a fine state or purchased ready-made finely ground.

We cut off the tail, fins and head of the fish. We cut the still chilled carcass along the back, carefully moving the knife along the ridge, cut off the flesh, and then separate the rib bones. We separate the ridge from both sides and open the carcass like a book. If the fish is well chilled, the backbone and ribs come off very easily. We do not cut the fish along the belly.
We remove all the insides and clean off the black film using paper napkins. Wash the fish well under running water and wipe dry.
Sprinkle the mackerel with the prepared mixture and rub it in well. Don't forget to pay attention to the outside of the fish.

We fold the mackerel into its original shape and wrap it tightly in cling film. Place the fish in the refrigerator for eight to twelve hours. Then put it in the freezer for at least two hours.

After just two hours in the freezer, the Murmansk Salo dish is ready.

Mackerel must be cut while still frozen; it cuts perfectly into thin pieces.

Place on a plate and decorate with herbs. In ten to fifteen minutes the mackerel will thaw, it can be served with a side dish.

As you can see, preparing this fish is very simple. Your actual time spent is cleaning the fish and seasoning it with spices and salt. The rest of the time the fish is cooked without your participation.
The dish “Murmansk lard” is convenient in case of “guests on the doorstep”. Very tasty spicy salted mackerel can always be stored in the freezer for such an occasion.
