If there are wireworms on the site, potatoes and carrots suffer greatly. This pest gnaws through root crops, resulting in a significant portion of the crop becoming inedible. It is also detrimental to young seedlings. Therefore, in early spring, or immediately after planting, you need to get rid of the wireworm in advance.
What you will need:
- old potatoes;
- bamboo skewers or thin wooden sticks;
- shovel;
- bucket.
The process of catching wireworms
In the spring, after planting the garden, you need to place traps around the area. They are potatoes cut into halves, stitched on the skin side with skewers.
Potato halves with skewers are buried in the ground to the depth of a spade bayonet and left for several days.
A skewer or stick will make them easy to find. After 2-3 days, you need to dig up the bait and throw it into a bucket of water.
The soil dug up near the potatoes is inspected for wireworms. The wireworm drowned with bait will float out, after which the traps are again placed in place.When re-placed, it is worth updating the cut to enhance the smell of raw potatoes.
Thus, the traps are dug out and cleared of wireworms every couple of days. After 2-3 weeks, the pest on the site will be caught and destroyed, just before the harvest begins to form. Due to the fact that in the spring the wireworm has nothing special to eat, it very actively goes to traps, so it can be almost completely exterminated without chemical treatment.
