An old tree on the site can be used as a rootstock for grafting new varieties. As a result, in a few years it will be possible to collect fruits of different colors, tastes and ripening periods from it.

What you will need:

  • grafting knife;
  • regular knife;
  • mallet;
  • garden var.

Grafting onto an old tree trunk

A freshly cut branch with a diameter of about 10 mm with a good dormant bud is used as a scion.

It is prepared in advance.

Next, a horizontal notch is made on the trunk of the old tree with a knife until the wood is dense.

The bark is removed upward from it to suit the width of the scion. It is cut to light wood. The sampling height is 2-3 fingers.

Below the horizontal mark under the stripped bark, a vertical notch is made to the wood.

After this, you need to take the scion and cut it below the bud at an acute angle. The cut should be on the opposite side of the growth point. The bark on the sides of the cut is stripped down to the green cambium.

Next, the scion is inserted into the prepared nest and hammered under the bark with a mallet.

Then the grafting site and the open end of the cutting are covered with garden pitch or plasticine.If direct rays fall on the graft, it needs to be shaded at first.

Due to the deep cut, this method has better survival rate. A lot of healing juice is sent to such a damaged part of the trunk, which is used to nourish the scion.

A month later, a branch will grow from the bud on the scion. To make it stronger, it should be shortened, leaving about 4 leaves.
