The process of repairing an old barrel
The biggest problem with rusted barrels is the bottom, which rots faster than the walls. In order not to repair numerous holes in it, you just need to turn the barrel over and cut an inspection hatch in the bottom. As a result, the old bottom will serve as a lid to prevent leaves and other debris from entering the barrel. Sheet steel is welded onto the former open top of the barrel. Thus, you can make a new completely intact bottom.
Holes on the walls can be quickly sealed by cold welding.
To do this, the metal around them is cleaned and the holes are sealed. It is advisable to paint the inside of the barrel, coat it with mastic or cement mortar.
Also, if the barrel is installed on an elevated surface, then before painting you can weld a fitting with a tap into it to connect the hose. This will allow you to drain the water by gravity, and even connect drip irrigation to it.
