Slate may not be the most beautiful roofing material, but it is very reliable. It can easily last 50 years without leaking, but only if it is installed correctly and the corners are adjusted.

Rules for laying and cutting slate

The maximum tightness between slate sheets is obtained when laying from bottom to top without displacement of the longitudinal edges. You can place it from left to right or vice versa. The whole problem with working with slate is that in the corners the waves are applied in 2 or 4 layers, so they stick out, which looks ugly. A loose fit can cause the roof to be torn off by gusts of wind. This problem is solved by trimming the corners.

To determine how much to cut in the corners, you need to measure the length of the roof slope. Based on this indicator, you can calculate how much overlap there will be on the sheets. For example, if there is an overlap of 15 cm, then for trimming you need to put a mark on the edge of the slate 15 cm from the edge vertically. The horizontal distance from the corner is 2 times less - 7.5 cm. A corner cut along such marks will have an optimal bevel.

When laying from left to right, the first slate is nailed intact. All sheets are placed on top of it vertically with the lower right corner trimmed. The first slate of the second column is laid with the upper left corner cut off. Sheets without the lower right and upper left corners are superimposed on it. The last sheet of the column has a cut only in the lower right corner. In the last column, starting from the first slate, only the upper left corners are cut. The final sheet is nailed whole. If laying is done from right to left, then the corners are cut the other way around.

The last column must be made of wide slate. If a narrow insert is required, then it must be placed in the penultimate column. When choosing the installation direction, you need to start nailing the slate from the far edge towards the street, in which case the trimmings will be invisible from the front facade.
