How to make a high voltage boost converter without transistors

This boost converter is capable of increasing AC voltage from 220 V to DC 1850 V. Essentially, it is a multiplier that increases the input voltage by about 8.5 times and rectifies it. Sometimes it is necessary, for example, to make an electric fly swatter. The coefficient can easily be changed in any direction to the desired values.

The converter consists of 3 identical parts: doublers. The circuit is connected to a 220 V network. Let's take a closer look at the principle of operation of the circuit.

Principle of operation


The value of 220 V is a quadratic indicator of the operating value. At the peak of the half-wave, the amplitude value fluctuates around 311 V. During the passage of the negative half-wave, the first capacitor through the diode will charge to a voltage of about 311 V.

Further, when a positive half-wave passes, the capacitor will give its values ​​to another capacitor plus the network voltage. As a result, the second capacitor will be charged to 620 V, taking into account the drop on the diodes.

Since there are 3 such doublers in the circuit, the output will be approximately 1860 V.

Not very difficult arithmetic. The number of doublers can be any (within reasonable limits).

How to make a boost converter converter


Now let's put everything together in hardware. You can make the payment yourself or order it.

A completely simple board was ordered. We solder all the components onto it according to the diagram.

Since it is difficult to find a tester for voltages greater than 1000 V, we measure the output voltage from the converter through a divider by 100.

As you can see, the output is about 1850 V.
How to make a high voltage boost converter without transistors

If you bring the output contacts closer to a distance of less than 1 mm, a discharge will occur. Such discharges do not harm the converter due to their low power. Remember safety precautions when working with high voltage.
