Store-bought quick-release or wing nuts usually have only 2 hooking bits, but in many cases it is better if they are equipped with a round handle. In the latest version they are not found on sale so often. If you need just such a nut, then you don’t have to look for it in stores, but simply make it yourself.

Method 1. Making from plywood

To make a quick-release nut with a handle you will need:
  • plywood;
  • furniture thrust nut;
  • glue.

A blank for making such a nut can be drilled out of plywood with a core drill of a suitable diameter.

Then it needs to be divided into sectors, for example, by gluing a lined sheet of paper on top.

Next, the workpiece is clamped on a drilling machine, and its edges along the sector lines are selected with a cutter.

The sharp edges of the workpiece are ground off.

Finally, all that remains is to press the furniture thrust nut into the workpiece.

To be safe, you can then pull it out and spread glue between the nut and the plywood.

For beauty, paint is applied to the finished product.

Method 2: Casting with epoxy resin

To make a wing nut using this method you will need:
  • plywood 20 mm or thicker;
  • epoxy resin;
  • wax or paraffin candle;
  • furniture sleeve;
  • fumlenta;
  • bolt.

First you need to make an injection mold. A blind hole is drilled in a board or thick plywood with a 28 mm Forstner drill to a depth of 7-8 mm.

Then it is deepened with an 18 mm drill another 7 mm. In the center of the form, drill through with a drill equal to the diameter of the bolt to tighten the nut.

The inside of the mold is lubricated with melted wax or paraffin from a candle.

Next, take a bolt, wrap a fumlenta around it, and screw on a furniture sleeve. It is then placed in the mold and it is filled with epoxy resin.

After the epoxy has dried, the nut is knocked out of the mold and sanded.

After this it looks just like it was purchased.
