It is quite difficult for a novice welder to simultaneously monitor the correct fixation of the parts to be joined and the start of the welding process. Usually, when the electrode touches the welding site, the fixation is broken. To facilitate and automate the welding process, you can make a simple device and this does not require the skills of an experienced specialist or scarce materials.

Will need

Materials:
  • Steel plate;
  • bolts;
  • round steel rod.
Tools and accessories:
  • Scribler and metal square;
  • Bulgarian;
  • bench vice;
  • hammer;
  • core;
  • drill;
  • tap;
  • welding machine;
  • welded parts.

Manufacturing process of automatic welding fixture

We mark the steel strip of the given dimensions using a scriber and a metal square.

According to the markings, we make shallow transverse grooves, within which we cut out a rectangular slot with a grinder of the estimated width.

We cut the workpiece from the steel strip.We alternately clamp the workpiece in a vice at the level of the cuts and, using a hammer, bend it at a right angle towards the grooves.

In the center of the curved shelves we tap and drill through holes, in which we then cut threads with a tap.

Screw one bolt into the threaded holes.

We drill a central through hole of the required diameter in a round steel rod.

We install the rod with the hole at a slight angle so that its end coincides with the inner edge of the narrow side of the slot and is directed outward and upward.

In this position, we weld the rod to the frame and drill a transverse hole in it from the top center, in which we also cut a thread. Screw the bolt into the threaded hole.

The device is ready for use.

We select sections of profile pipe as parts to be butt welded.

We install the device on top of the parts to be welded with its “legs” down so that the joint is in the middle of the slot.

We insert the coated electrode into the rod with the hole on top. To ensure that the parts being welded remain stationary, we fix them by screwing in two side bolts.

We align the end of the electrode with the starting point of the weld, bend it so that it lies on the joint. That is, welding will take place, as it were, with a lying electrode.

We connect the holder to the other end of the electrode, set the necessary parameters of the welding process and turn on the welding machine.

After the arc is excited, the process proceeds, one might say, automatically: the parts are stationary, and the arc moves as the electrode melts.

Upon completion of welding, remove the device by first unscrewing the bolts securing the parts.

Having beaten off the slag and cleaned the seam with a grinder, we make sure that it is of high quality in shape and structure.

The benefits of a simple device are obvious.
