A vice in a home workshop will never be superfluous. They can be used to process both metal and wooden workpieces. Since buying a vice in a store is associated with significant costs, it is better to make them yourself from waste materials. Only the simplest tools and basic plumbing training are required.
Will need
Materials:- steel strip;
- profile square pipes;
- lead screw;
- nuts, screws and washers;
- spray paint;
- grease and liquid lubricant.
The process of making a vice from waste materials
We screw the nut onto the lead screw ten turns and weld it to the lead screw.
We put a washer on the screw and tighten it with the second nut so that the washer rotates freely. We also weld the second nut to the screw.
We insert the free end of the lead screw into a square pipe of a smaller cross-section, and it into a square pipe of a larger cross-section. We weld the washer to the end of the outer square pipe.
After making sure that the inner pipe is not welded to the washer, we put it back on the lead screw and press it against the washer inside the outer pipe. We screw another nut onto the lead screw until it stops at the end of the inner square pipe and in this position we weld it to the pipe.
We cut two pieces of equal length from the steel strip, place them under the outer square pipe from below and across closer to the ends, and weld them securely on all sides.
From the profile square pipe we cut two pieces of equal length. We install one of them on top and across the end of the inner square pipe and weld it on all sides.
We screw the lead screw all the way in and place the second section on the outer square pipe, pressing it tightly against the previously welded one, and aligning it in the transverse direction; we also weld it on all sides.
We mark two identical fragments on the steel strip, which coincide in length with the transversely welded elements. On the marked areas of the steel strip we apply a cross-shaped notch with a grinder and then cut it into two halves.
We fold them with the notches inward, align them along the ends and height, install them between transversely located sections of square pipes so that they rise slightly above them, compress them using a lead screw and weld each to the adjacent element.
Using a grinder, we remove beads and splashes of metal from welding, smooth out seams and sharp corners.
We drill holes in the support plates.
We cover the notch of the jaws and the inner square pipe with construction tape and paint the vice with spray paint.
After the paint has dried, lubricate part of the inner pipe within the limits of its movement with grease, and the threads of the lead screw with liquid oil.We move the screw from one end to the other several times to disperse the lubricant along the entire length of the parts to be lubricated.
We attach the vice to a reliable base using screws and washers.
Our homemade product is quite ready to work for its intended purpose.
