A regular tape measure is a more versatile tool than it might seem at first glance. It's much more functional. Almost everyone knows about some of its capabilities, but there are also unusual techniques for working with it.

1. Parallel marking

The tape measure can be used like a marking thicknesser. To do this, we block the tape stretched to the required distance with a button, and guide it with its body along the edge of the sheet material workpiece. The serrated tip of a tape measure will leave a straight scratch.

2. Parallel marking on hard surfaces

The previous method allows you to leave a barely visible scratch, and only on soft materials. Marking on harder ones is done using a pencil. We simply press it to the tip of the tape and carry it out in the same way.

3. We measure the internal angles accurately

On the body of many tape measures its length is written. This is necessary to measure the exact distance between the corners. If you measure it by bending the tape, you get an error of a couple of millimeters or even a centimeter.

For accurate measurements, we rest against one of the corners with the body of the tape measure, and against the opposite corner with the tip of the tape. The distance will be equal to the sum of the value on the tape and the length of the body.

4. Marking circles and arcs

You can glue a pencil to the body of the tape measure with hot glue.

Now, clinging to the head of a nail or screw with the tip of the tape, you can draw circles around it.

5. Marking thicknesser

Using a glued pencil, you can also draw parallels relative to the edge of the part. Thus, we work with a tape measure as a regular marking thicknesser. The difference from the previous options is that it is not the body that slides along the edge, but the tip of the tape.

6. Fixing the tape with a magnet

If you install a strong magnet on the tip of the tape, it will be really difficult to tear it off the metal surface. A magnet will help you quickly and accurately measure distances when working with metal structures.

7. The simplest compass

You can hammer a thin nail into the blank for marking the circle. Now we cling to it with the body where the tape comes out, and attach a pencil to the tip. After this we draw a perfect circle.

8.Circle measurement

It is impossible to accurately measure the circumference of a cylindrical part with a tape measure, since its tape is refracted. Just wrap a stiff thread around it and record the distance. Then apply it to the tape and get the exact circumference without error.

9. Colored marks on the tape

If the tape measure is used to mark different repeating lengths, then in order not to forget them, you can leave colored marks on the tape. We just stretch it and make markings along them. This way you won’t get confused and will do everything quickly.

10. Cutting drywall

A tape measure will also help you quickly and easily cut the desired piece of drywall. We simply use it as a marking thicknesser, but instead of a pencil we apply a mounting knife to the tip. It will cut through the first layer of cardboard and the sheet will break along the line.
