Current clamps are a very necessary device, since they allow you to measure current without connecting to live parts. It's safe and easy. It is enough to grasp the current-carrying wire with a sliding transformer, and the value will be displayed on the display.

Typically, current clamps do not have a range for measuring small currents, less than 100 mA. So if the task arises of measuring the current below, then you will have to use a multimeter, and therefore open and connect it to the circuit.

How to measure low current with current clamps

But there is still a little trick, how you can simply measure a small current using current clamps. Despite its simplicity, not even all electricians are familiar with this life hack.

The fact is that the sliding transformer has the same magnetic circuit as any other low-frequency transformer.

And by passing a conductor through its magnetic core to measure current, the transformer transmits a magnetic field to the measuring winding located inside the device.

And if you change the transformation ratio, then the readings will change. And changing this coefficient is quite simple: winding another turn of the current-carrying wire.

In this case, the readings will increase accordingly by 2 times.

This way you can vary the desired multiplier to measure a lower voltage.

Let's say, having wound 4 wires around the core, the real current will be equal to the display readings divided by four.

This method will not only allow you to measure low current, but also increase the accuracy when measuring current in the lower limits of the measuring range.
