If a round file for sharpening chainsaw teeth is equipped with some additional accessories, then any adult can handle sharpening a saw chain.

Materials and tools:

  • dull saw chain of a chainsaw;
  • round file with a diameter of 5.5 mm;
  • friction bearing;
  • plastic stepped bushing with metal insert;
  • a piece of plastic or rubber hose;
  • drill (screwdriver);
  • bench vice.

The process of sharpening a chainsaw saw chain with a cordless drill

We securely clamp the chainsaw guide bar in the jaws of a bench vice and block the chain from moving along the bar.

For the sharpening process we use a round file with a diameter of 5.5 mm. Depending on the chainsaw model and the size of the chain, the file may be larger or smaller in diameter.

We cut off and round the sharp end of the file so as not to injure your hands on it during the process of sharpening the teeth of the chainsaw saw chain. We will use a regular rolling bearing of suitable size with a stepped plastic sleeve inserted into its hole with a metal insert, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the file.

We insert a round file into the metal insert and, from the back side of the bearing, onto the rounded end of the file, press a piece of plastic or rubber hose onto the rounded end of the file. We clamp the free end of a round file into the chuck of a cordless drill or powered tool.

We mark the tooth on the chain from which we begin sharpening, so as not to repeat sharpening it twice.

We place the body of the file under the cutting edge of the tooth at a sharpening angle, turn on the drill so that the direction of rotation is directed towards the tooth and make several reciprocating movements with the file, holding it with one hand by the handle and with the other by the bearing. It is very important to maintain the same sharpening angle from the beginning to the end of the process.

Then we move on to sharpening the next tooth, whose sharpening angle will be directed in the opposite direction. In this way, we gradually sharpen the entire saw chain one tooth at a time.
