Some round threaded connections (pipes and fittings, oil filters, large lids on containers, etc.) are difficult to unscrew and tighten securely due to the lack of suitable tools. In such situations, a universal device in the form of chain pliers will help. Any adult with basic skills in working with metal can make them.

Will need

Materials:

  • clamping pliers;
  • roller drive chain;
  • drive sprocket;
  • steel rectangular plate;
  • round steel bar.

Tools: grinder, bench vice, drilling machine, grinder, welding machine, hammer and core.

The process of making universal chain pliers from scrap materials

We cut off the upper jaw of the clamping pliers at the base using a grinder.

We drill a hole in the bottom jaw at the end on a drilling machine, using the last link of the drive roller chain as a template. Cut off and round the tip of the sponge.

We fasten the drive roller chain to the jaw of the clamping pliers using a pin, flattening the ends, making sure that the last link of the chain rotates freely in both directions without jamming or jamming.

We remove half the teeth from the drive sprocket, leaving the central hole intact.

For a rectangular plate cut from steel sheet material, we round all 4 corners using a grinder.

We weld it in the longitudinal direction with an overlap from the outside to the handle, as if instead of a removed sponge.

We cut a small fragment from a round rod of the required diameter and weld it to the outer free corner of the plate from the inside in a vertical position.

We shorten the welded fragment of the round rod to the required size.

Using a hammer, we press half of the drive sprocket onto the remaining part of the round rod with an interference fit, placing the teeth towards the jaw of the clamping pliers, and weld it.

Testing the strength of chain pliers. To do this, we clamp a massive round timber or thick-walled pipe into a bench vise, wrap it tightly around it with a chain and place the free end over the teeth of the drive sprocket. We bring the handles of the clamping pliers together, stand on them and make sure that the homemade tool can easily withstand the weight of an adult.

With these universal chain pliers you can easily unscrew pipe connections, large round caps on containers, vehicle oil filters, etc.
