I needed to buy 4 doors. I did this by “trial and error”, as a result of which I came to the conclusion how it should have been done, spending a minimum of physical effort and money.
First measure the width and height of the old doors. It will be different for interior doors and doors leading to the kitchen, bathroom and bath. In addition, it is necessary to measure the openings, that is, the height and width of the doorways from concrete to concrete.
Typically, room doors have dimensions of 800 x 2000 mm. The kitchen door will be smaller: 700 x 2000 mm, the bath and toilet doors will be even smaller: 550 or 600 mm, the height may be only 1900 mm. Having summarized what you need, look through the Internet offers.
Now you can go shopping. But the main landmark is the largest supermarket in the city.
But you will only see the door leaf, while it is better to evaluate the design in its complete (assembled) form. Specialized stores are staffed by sales consultants who explain a lot.
The exhibited door samples have the most varied, inviting, and even exclusive designs. But you stubbornly keep in mind the interior of your home, and select the door accordingly, so that it does not end up being “a golden button on a modest sweatshirt.”
A door made from low-quality raw materials may warp in a year or two. Doors made of oak, walnut, pine, and other solid wood are of high quality, but expensive. Products made from glued solid wood will be cheaper, but the tones of individual glued sections may not match in tone.
Boards made from waste wood (MDF) are the most popular material for doors, as they are quite impressive and reasonable in price. Such doors tolerate moisture and temperature changes well; they can be safely installed in bathrooms and toilet rooms.
Chipboard (chipboard) looks good, is inexpensive, but is afraid of moisture. Doors made from it are good in room interiors.
Glazed doors are spectacular in themselves. Transparent, textured, colored glass is used. But when the doors slam, the glass may crack or break. Therefore, you should give preference to thick (4 mm) glass or multilayer (triplex).
When you have made your choice, purchase a complete set (box), otherwise at the climax of installing the door, you may not have any important part. What do you need?
Door leaf. In our minds, the door itself.
Side bars. This is a closed box of 4 bars if the doorway has a threshold, or 3 bars if there is no threshold. The bars are secured with tenons using waterproof glue.
Platbands.Door trims mask the clash between the door frame and the wall. They are made from the same material as the door leaf.
Hinged hinges. Screw-in (screws are screwed into the door and block), traditional overhead (hinged), mortise (installed in special recesses), combined.
Door handles. Brass handles are anti-corrosion and have a noble golden hue. Chrome and nickel plated handles decorate the product and are especially good for steel doors. Handles made of steel, silumin, aluminum, high-quality alloys, noble wood - there is a wide choice. But don’t forget that cheap pens can be aesthetically pleasing, modest and elegant at the same time.
Door stop. This is a door stopper that protects the door from hitting the wall. A floor limiter is most often used, but if the floors are parquet, a wall limiter is needed. It is better to purchase a magnetic stop that locks the door open.
The main problem that upsets owners when replacing doors is broken connections with existing wallpaper. Sometimes the width of the platbands is not enough to cover the mistakes of the master if the wallpaper was pasted earlier. Therefore, when renovating an apartment, first of all, the door openings are cleared of the old frame, and then the walls are plastered and other dirty work is done.
The door is assembled on the floor, if there are no more convenient planes, it is placed in the opening, reinforced with foam, and only after that the walls are covered. Finish with the installation of platbands. This door has no aesthetic flaws.
But my doors, which open on one side into a previously renovated living room, required re-gluing. Fortunately, the platbands almost covered the master's flaws.
But in the hallway, the shortcomings turned out to be so obvious that in addition to renovating two bedrooms and installing doors, we had to add treatment and wallpapering to one of the walls of the hallway room. A friend of mine in a similar situation followed the tried and tested path: she peeled off the old wallpaper herself, cut off all the excess with a sharp short knife, plastered it and stuck it back on.
Good luck with purchasing new doors and installing them, but remember that nothing will be done without you.
