For the manufacture of cloth polishing wheels, paper, calico, cloth, cotton fabrics, tarpaulins, etc. are most often used. But it is preferable to make them from old denim fabric due to its widespread use and properties such as wear resistance, hygroscopicity, non-susceptibility to electrification and etc.

Will need

In addition to old denim clothes, for work we will need:
  • fabric scissors;
  • old grinding wheel with mandrel;
  • round template approximately 50 mm in diameter;
  • marker;
  • awl;
  • small screwdriver.

Manufacturing process

We have to perform a few simple actions that will not require special efforts and skills, but accuracy and patience will be useful in the upcoming work.

1. Making circles

Using a template and a marker, apply at least 10 circles to the denim fabric spread out on a flat surface.

Using fabric scissors, carefully cut out disks from the fabric and, using some simple and accessible method, determine the centers and mark them with a marker.

We string circles of denim onto an awl along the center marks and set them aside for a while.

2. Disassembling the old grinding wheel

Using a screwdriver, remove the screw at the top of the circle, with the help of which all its parts are connected together. Let's disassemble the assembly - we won't need the drum and bottom washer, but the mandrel will be useful for further work.

3. Assembling denim circles on a mandrel

We cut out two washers from thick cardboard with a diameter slightly larger than the metal washers. They will serve as additional supports and sealing when assembling the denim discs on the mandrel and securing them securely.
We assemble the homemade product in the following sequence: first we put a metal washer on the mandrel, then a cardboard one, then 10 denim disks, again a cardboard disk, and finally a metal washer, on top of which we screw the nut tightly. The polishing disc is in principle ready for use for its intended purpose.

Practical use

We fix the lower part of the mandrel with a denim polishing wheel on top in the chuck of a drill or other tool that provides rotational movement. The best results in polishing can be achieved at medium speed of the rotary tool. This disc fabric disc is good for polishing workpieces and products made of metal, glass, plastic, wood, etc.
